Turkey Day (Nov 22, 2006)
« on: November 08, 2006, 12:12:06 PM »
Starting this thread early because, if memory serves, Dave didn't do a Turkey Day set for Thanksgiving last year.  Can we talk him into reviving it?  What shall we request?

(For those uninitiated, "Turkeys" are songs that, while big hits in their time and interesting to come across as a curiosity every once in a while, are at their core bad songs or bad performances.  Not to be confused with "Hits From Hell," bad songs that aren't interesting to come across, or "Guilty Pleasures," songs of dubious quality that you'll guardedly rep for among trusted friends.)
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

for 3 or 4 years in a row I requested "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora, it seems to me the ultimate Turkey, but Dave has yet to play it.

I stand corrected: We did get Turkeys last year, and I may have screwed up my definition:

indeed -- "stupid" but "good".  Last year's set was notorious for not containing any of the suggestions Dave solicited on his blog. Wonder if he'll bother this time.

Yep, now that I think about it, we didn't get the Foghead Xmas Card set though.
Let's get right to it.

Dave's current blog entry confirms: Turkey next Wednesday. He's now taking suggestions. Mike, cue 'Tarzan Boy' for the umpteenth time.

I seconded your request Mike; my entire comment was:

I don't think I have heard that Baltimora song since 1985, so I'd second that.

also howsabout Timbuk3 "My Future's So Bright"? It even contains the word 'turkey' in the lyrics:
"I'm heavenly blessed and worldy wise,
I'm a peeping tom turkey with X-ray eyes."

lastly, I always look forward to "Mah Na Mah Na", but could we maybe give "Tubthumping" the year off?

Thanks in advance for one of the sets of the year I most look forward to.

er, I believe the actual lyric is "peeping-tom TECHIE", at least that's the  way I've always heard it. Certainly makes more sense within the context of the song.

Peeping tom + tom turkey = peeping tom turkey, plus which they actually had a little cartoon turkey in the video for a couple seconds.

Nice mondegreen tho'

I never saw the video but every lyric site I've checked, including Top40db has it as "techie".

and per the "amIright" mondegreen site:

Misheard Lyrics:
I'm a peeping Tom Turkey with x-ray eyes.
Original Lyrics:
I'm a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

I heard it as techie too.  Even with the turkey in the video (which I haven't seen), it could still be "techie".  Where's my 1986, not that I really want it?

Even if I'm wrong don't tell Mr. Morey, the set needs a little fresh blood.

pre-set, Dave plays Alanis MoreUpset, "Ironic", which actually does qualify as a Turkey in my book. Not understanding the meaning of the title of your song is the definition of "stupid", no?

Sure, it's stupid, but is it good?
and any fool knows
a dog needs a home
a shelter
