No kidding. A couple of good friends have lost their jobs as a result--they worked in the main office in West Sacto.

Having grown up in Sacramento pretty much at the same time that Tower was growing up, a huge portion of my vinyl and CDs came from Tower stores. I can recall going into their downtown store and buying December's Children by the Stones when I was about 7 or 8. The remaining stores will be open for a couple more months as the liquidators move as much of their stock as they can. Right now the music is 10% off, that figure will gradually grow as they get closer to the final end date. Not too many bargains to be had yet, as the price they're basing the discounts on is full list. Wait a couple weeks, things will start to be picked thru but you should still be able to find some deals.
Let's get right to it.

This weekend I saw a poster waving person announcing the liquidation of my local store.

I too have fond memories of the Tower in SF. It was all vinyl and 8 tracks. I'd buy a lot of 45's. One specific 45 I remember is One Tin Soldier

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
Sharks bleed teal.

Indeed, when Tower first opened 2 stores in NYC in the mid-'80s it was an event. The one at 66th & B'way was 2 blocks from where I worked so I was in there constantly, buying many many 45s & LPs. RIP.
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

Just did my obligatory Tower run.  Came away with a few gifts for others (including Def Leppard's power-pop covers album), one treat for me (Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes greatest hits -- bought it for "Without Love," loved everything else too except "Havin' a Party"), and one treat for you all (and me, if I rip it to my iTunes first -- but it's a surprise).
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”
