Last night I stumbled across a great documentary...
Dolly Parton performing on Conan O'Brien's show in minutes. She was charming in the pre-song interview. Couldn't remember all her duet partners on her new album, which seemed weird.

"stumbling" is what we'll all be doing more of from now on -- have you seen the dreadful new incarnation of TV Guide? Rupert Murdoch strikes again. No more local listings! It's now a piece of crap that will go directly from the mailbox to the recycle bin. Sorry I re-upped a few months back; had I known I wouldn't've renewed.
Quote from: "RGMike"Gee, y'know that might actually cost them MONEY to print local editions, even tho they've been doing it for, I dunno, 50 YEARS or so? I'm sure subscribers will bail in droves. More proof that Rupert Murdoch is a tool of the devil.Quote from: "urth"Last night I stumbled across a great documentary..."stumbling" is what we'll all be doing more of from now on -- have you seen the dreadful new incarnation of TV Guide? Another reason to buy the Sunday paper, even tho the Chron's weekly TV sched is pretty lame--minimal daytime coverage, no late night listings, not even all basic cable channels are included, and so on and so on. But at least you get the local stations.

I agree with your assessment of Rupert Murdoch, but for me, I use the tvguide.com/listings link. Once setup, it's quicker to find what's on TV (if you have that laptop in the living room!) than to open the paper. Plus there's more detail about the episodes.

Good sense of humor. Dolly Does Dylan. heh heh
I shit you not...
on channel 7, watching news while I grade papers, they are interviewing some bike rider in the area of Hawk Hill, where a woman was murdered, and you can hear very clearly in the background "Dirty Laundry!"
first time music on show; they just did The Denial Twist, commercial break
then...
Oh. My. God.
(and I don't mean that in a good way...)
I'm watching the ESPN New Year's Eve thing, mainly because Little Steven is involved. The Troggs, looking rather old, just did "Wild Thing, and now they're using the Caesars' "Jerk it Out" as the background for a sports montage. Host Stuart Scott is embarrassing himself even more than I thought possible (even for him). And as much as I worship Mr Van Zandt, he really needs to take that multicolored schmatta off his head. Dude, yer pushin' 60.
Food Network has been using the J. Geils cover of Night Time to promote their prime time schedule lately. Yeesh.
Watching VH1, 40 Freakiest Concert Moments. Cool. Some stuff I never heard about. Never knew Jimi set guitar on fire. Did Jim Morrison really expose himself in Miami? Some weird shit. Howard Stern flying into a show in an assless gold superhero suit. Fartman. Never knew.
I just watched Death Cab For Cutie perform "Soul Meets Body" on Saturday Night Live. Phe-fucking-nominal. I thought the album was nice enough without being especially special -- certainly not as touching as their previous, Transatlanticism (gorgeous album cover on that, too) -- but they're far more passionate live than I would have expected, and their attention to craft comes through.
Are they getting any KFOG love? Any love from other clubbers?

"Soul Meets Body" is in ridiculously heavy KFOG rotation. To me it's just another Coldplay soundalike (and thus I assume it's not typical of the rest of the album?).

Gaz, didn't my quote answer your second question?
Mike, EXCUSE ME!?!?!?!
Death Cab are from Belling-fucking-ham WA (actually a very nice town, been there many times), not the UK. Plus they formed a year earlier. I think you'd have to be awfully jaded to say that they're just another Chris Martin navel gazing clone (or what Irish Greg memorably called 'sad bastard music'). Ben Gibbard achieved more succes with his side project The Postal Sevice (which is far closer to New Order or Andy Bell than Coldplay) in the past 2 years than with Death Cab, but as Gaz said Transatlanticism is still the better album.
To my thinking they are either a more folky Pet Shop Boys or a more proggy Weezer with accoustic instead of grunge guitars.
And Gaz, KFOG is now playing the second single "Crooked Teeth".

Mick's voice was for shit. It was all just mugging. And the censors cowardly excised "you make a dead man come" and "I'm just one of your cocks."
Anyone see the Wonderfest?
I watched most of the painful show. Went grocery shopping after the halftime show. Now to give the geezers credit, they did real well out at SBC a few months ago. Tonight was not a great effort. I didn't even notice the editing.

The audio quality was horrendous, as well. According to Mr. Morey this morning the Stones agreed in advance not to sing those two lines, so the censors didn't have to actively do anything.

And really, no surprise, I suppose -- Mick was the guy who changed "spend the night together" to "spend some time together" at Ed Sullivan's request (while bad boy Jim Morrison refused to alter the lyrics to "Light My Fire" and was banned from the show forever).

And to bring this full circle, that original Stones Ed Sullivan Show appearance took place on the same night as......
.....Super Bowl I.
Oh no.
Sly Stone on the Grammys was so sad, so depressing. He was completely incapable of performing and the many many "tribute" performers were ill-chosen and did not do the songs justice (though Joss Stone's dress was fab and Maroon 5 were bastions of taste).
Yeah, you read that right.
P.S. Sly, if you wondered, is now hunchbacked, and with a giant blond mohawk kinda like Jean Beauvoir used to wear.
Glad I forgot the Grammys were on.
Quote from: "RGMike"Glad I forgot the Grammys were on.
Well, it's a lot like all awards shows; some of it shines, and some of it shits.
I definitely dug the U2/Mary J. Blige "One" performance, but I'm a sap for that stuff anyway. Seeing Sir Paul do "Helter Skelter" was kind of interesting.
I did *love* Mary J's reading of "One," though. She gave me chills in a way no live performance has managed in a long time, and I hope it becomes a smash single.

interesting disagreement on the KFOG Morning Show: Greg said that the perf brought him to tears; Renee said she didn't like it and thought "wow, she (MJB) can't really sing 'white' music".

I'm close to getting genuinely pissed off at that comment. How's Renee defining "black music" and "white music"? Which does Mariah sing?
And frankly, as I was watching that perf, Mike, I was thinking about your comments earlier this week about Aretha's willingness in earlier days to cover anything and everything, including "The Weight," which I suppose is almost as "white" as rock can be. It shouldn't be such a goddamned shocker when R&B bleeds into rock or vice versa.
Troy Patterson, Slate's TV critic, on Sly:
"The most hyped moment regarded the possible emergence of funk pioneer Sly Stone from wherever it is that he dwells. At the climax of a cluttered medley sung by a subpar supergroup, Stone showed up looking the very model of a postmodern major genius/recluse—a blond mohawk like a vast coxcomb, a silvery jacket like a 24th-century lab coat, sparkly belt, wraparound shades. This is how Gravity's Rainbow cultists want Thomas Pynchon to look. "

pretty weird, eh?
Another weekend, another PBS fundraiser that revolves around baby-boomer music. This time it's an all-star salute to the 4 Tops. Paul Rodgers (minus Queen) just regaled us with one of my fave Tops non-hits, "Love Music", and "Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever" (Susan Tedeschi has nothing to worry about). Oddest intro of the night: Host Nick Ashford introduced Rodgers by saying "Paul Rodgers and Free helped lead the British Invasion" WTF?
But all is forgiven -- here's Ree-Ree. Damn, her boobs are bigger than Dolly and Latifah put together!
Oh-oh, I was wondering where Levi was -- and here he is in a wheelchair, unable to sing. This is too too sad.
Apparently John Deacon, who was nowhere to be seen & wasn't mentioned, isn't touring with them, which I didn't realize.
Quote from: "mshray"Apparently John Deacon, who was nowhere to be seen & wasn't mentioned, isn't touring with them, which I didn't realize.I recall hearing an interview with Taylor and May somewhere (CG?) in which they said they asked Deacon to take part, but he just felt he was beyond playing in a rock band anymore. He wished them well, and bore them no ill will, but he took a pass. (One assumes he's making something from the use of the Queen name, trademarks, music etc., so it's not like he's being shut out entirely.)
pretty bizarre, as Colbert was using an old Cars video of "Magic" to prove Jesus walked on water. Then during Colbert's 'putting on notice' shtick, he asked Ric if there was anyone he wanted to put on notic, and, you guessed it, he named Todd Rundgren. Stephen just happened to have a sign printed already for Todd (after finding the J. Geils Band) and so Todd went up on the board!

This marked the first time in years I watched an ep of SNL from start to finish. Smigel is a fucking genius, most especially the Darlene Love song "Christmas For the Jews." Not only hilarious, but musically perfectly rendered. I adore Darlene Love even more now.

I guess they've given up on Amstel Light.

I wondered about that too -- I always wondered why they had the Amstel brand to begin with; I guess they thought the idea of a Heineken "light" would somehow taint the original. But they've changed their minds, obviously.

I've only seen a couple of episodes on DVD, so I don't know too much about the characters, but I seem to remember thinking they tried to slip hip music into the show.
Okay, it seems to be an unwritten rule that every American Idol ep has at least one random celebrity sitting in the front row that you had almost forgotten about, but tonight takes the cake.

Either that, or Todd's got a comeback series in development and this was a trial balloon to see how he registers on the cult(ural) radar.
did anyone else watch American Idol last night? Just curious. It was actually quite good, with all kinds of guest appearances (and I'm not talking about the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Heather Locklear, Ben Stiller & David Hasselhof - who was caught getting teary-eyed - in the audience). Mary J. did "One" with Elliott, which brought the house down. Burt Bacharach came out to play piano as they did a really long but well constructed medley of his hits, performed primarily by the idols, but at the end Dionne showed up for "Walk On By" looking fab. Paris did a really good duet with Al Jarreau including a bit of trading scat back & forth. Chris got onstage with Live & he and Ed Kowalczyk looked like twins. Toni Braxton made an appearance but I forget with whom 'cuz she looked so hot I couldn't take my eyes off her. Meatloaf (!) sang a duet with Katherine (apparently Bat Out of Hell III is soon to be upon us). With about 10 minutes to go Ryan Seacrest said, "that concludes the special guest apppearance section of the program," except he was lying. The lights go down, the band starts playing and out struts Prince!

Wow, whatever happened to him?
When I belonged to a gay advertising-and-media professionals group in NY, Sweeney and his boyfriend/writing partner were guest speakers at a meeting (right after he'd left SNL). He was actually very smart and interesting, talking mostly about the fact that the SNL folks had never dealt with an openly gay cast member before. (He was best known for playing Nancy Reagan in drag.) He went on to write the screenplay for one of the better coming-of-age-in-the-'60s movies of the '80s, Shag. But after that, I lost track of him.

Interestingly, KTEH is showing the real PF (from 1994) later tonight.

This time I caught Billy Preston's showstopping rendition of "That's the Way God Planned It" and Ringo flubbing the lyrics to "It Don't Come Easy" (well, not when you're trying to drum and sing at the same time, it don't).

They're called the Australian Pink Floyd Show, but they relocated to the UK, and they appear to play big gigs, not little clubs. I kinda wished I caught a little of it. The real Pink Floyd: Pulse on TV is pretty cool too.

pretty good production values, but for me, he peaked in '72 when I saw him at Winterland. Great show. Openers were Sylvester and Flo and Eddie.
He was a big star to us local yokels. I also saw him at Longshoreman's Hall opening for Joan Baez and Country Joe. I believe it was a benefit for Vincent Hallinan.Quote from: "ggould"Wow, Sylvester in '72? That was years before he had a record deal.

I wanted to see that. I'm glad YouTube is my VCR.

Will he be standing on top of a Ford truck?
I was just flipping thru the channels, and stopped on CSI:NY (I like to keep track of Due South alumni, of which Melina Kanakaredes is one of the more successful) and caught the opening credits. Perhaps you guys already knew this, but the Who's "Baba O'Riley" is the title music.
Seems like a pretty tacky show.
I'm not terribly surprised; the genie is out of the bottle as far as my 'sacred' music being used for secular purposes. I guess I could kind of imagine "Who Are You?" in a detective show, but what does "Baba O'Riley" have to do with anything? BTW, Roger Daltrey is supposed to guest star next week!Quote from: "ggould"I was just flipping thru the channels, and stopped on CSI:NY (I like to keep track of Due South alumni, of which Melina Kanakaredes is one of the more successful) and caught the opening credits. caught part of the Macy's Parade, and there on a float looking painfully old were Hall & Oates. And it was the NY Daily News "Big Apple" float -- they couldn't find actual Noo Yawkers for that one?
For those who hadn't heard this yet, the halftime entertainment at this year's Super Bowl will be...
Prince.
As EW quipped, "...because if there's one thing Super Bowl audences love, it's raw yet ambiguous sexuality." LOL!
Oh, and Corrine Bailey Rae and KT Tunstall are on Austin City Limits this evening.
So Stephen Colbert has been flogging (for weeks) his big "guitar shred-off" with the guitarist from the Decemberists, Mr Funk. The entire show tonite was built around it. They had a panel of judges in cluding someone from the NYT and NY governor-elect Eliot Spitzer, and Henry f--ing Kissinger, fer chrissakes, did the let-the-shredding-begin honors.
Anyway, Funk does his solo, and then Colbert steps up and promptly "cuts his finger" and can't continue, and he pleads for someone to sub for him. And out steps... Peter Frampton.
But the big surprise or me was when Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick came out at the end to play the Colbert Report theme music, which, I was astounded to learn, he wrote. (Astounded because it's always sounded to me like a clone of the Daily Show theme music, which was written by They Might Be Giants.)
Just saw Stephen Colbert's tribute to James Brown (Colbert says he's now officially "the hardest-working man in show business", having inherited the "2nd-hardest" title from Robert Altman recently). Then Colbert dropped down on one knee and they draped a red white & blue cape over him. Gotta love it.

personally, i think the title should go to dolly parton.
Golden Globes on now (tape delayed, I already know who wins). They don't bother with performances of the Best Song nominees, so Justin Timberlake announces the winner, Prince (who beat Seal, Sheryl Crow, Beyonce). But Prince isn't there so Justin crouches down to make himself as short as Prince and accepts the award on behalf of the Purple One. It's a great sight gag, but few in the audience seem to get it.

The Prince tune is from Happy Feet, the animated penguin movie.
Earlier today I saw one of the most hilariously bad TV shows ever: VH-1's The White Rapper Show. Another reality/competition show, 10 white people (8 men, 2 women) are living together in an industrial loft space in the South Bronx (!). They'll compete to be the best rapper in NY and the winner gets $100G. Didn't Jamie Kennedy already do this shtick?
One of them actually said "Yo, ahm jus' tryin' to get mah franchise poppin', yaknow'tI'msayin'?" Yikes.

The Purple One came thru, IMHO. Opening with "Let's Go Crazy" (natch) and then joined by a (presumably local) college marching band. Couple of oddball covers -- "Proud Mary" and "All Along the Watchtower", and then climaxing with "Purple Rain" in the, er, rain.
But the commercials have been quite lackluster this year.

We had the same kind of condescending coverage on these shores as well. (Gawker's appropriately bitchy headline take on it: "Hell, If This Was Really All They Wanted, We Probably Didn't Need the Dogs and Firehoses.")

AAAAAACK! Celine Dion will be singing at the Oscars. (She's part of a tribute to Ennio Morricone -- who deserves one, but jeez.) LOVE this quote from David Carr, the NY Times' Oscar blogger:
"In [our] house, when we want to signal that someone or something has jumped the shark, we clench our right fist and bounce it off our chest before finishing with hand upraised and fingers splayed, which is otherwise known as getting in touch with our inner Celine Dion."

I thought I heard "jocks in socks" but they bleeped "dick."
Some of it was pretty cool, some pretty lame. At this point, almost anything on my new TV that's in HD seems pretty compelling. I'm sure I will get over that soon. Now that I think of it, I'm not sure what I saw that was any good. Must've been something!
i'm saving my next all-nighter for the oscars. nothing beats the colts beating the bears except the dench, the mirren, and the streep under one roof. i'm already having hot flashes.

Any one else catch this latest PBS Pledge Month music extravaganza? "The British Beat" -- lots of '60s Brit acts (Searchers, Zombies, Peter & Gordon, Tremeloes, Paul Jones of Manfred Mann) reunited to milk some money from aging boomers who watch KQED. Hosted by Petula Clark, who's supposed to sing "Downtown" at some point.
ETA: they just did a cute bit where they juxtaposed Eric Burdon today with clips of the Animals on Ed Sullivan doing "We Gotta Get Outta This Place".
OMG, Lulu singing "To Sir With Love". She's had some serious work done, methinks.
Another Saturday, another round of PBS rock'n'roll fundraising. Tonite KCSM trotted out the famous "Rolling Stones R'n'R Circus" with the Stones, John Lennon, the Who, Marianne Faithfull et al. Great stuff, they're repeating it at 10:30.
One of KQED's digital channels is showing Atlantic Records: the House that Ahmet Built, a 2-hr docu about Ahmet Ehrtegun. Narrated by Bette Midler. Ehrtegun is being interviewed by director Taylor Hackford (aka Mr Helen Mirren).

Yet another PBS Pledge Drive where-are-they-now music special, this one devoted to "'70s Pop". A good one-third of it was recycled from the previous Disco Specials (KC, Taste of Honey) but some new perfs from Orleans, John Ford Coley (without England Dan), Starland Vocal Band -- it was quite Gaz-tastic. Highlight: Andy Kim, in full '70s Neil Diamond-lookalike mode (he's clearly had work done and dyes his hair raven-black), doing "Rock Me Gently".

If Barry Williams was hosting it, I caught almost an hour of it. Fun stuff - Maxine Nightingale looks *great*! (BTW, for about 20-odd years I thought/assumed she was white.)
I'm watching the rerun of a "first 5 years of SNL" special on NBC -- great clips, both comedy and music (Costello, Dead, Ray Charles doing "I Can See Clearly Now" [!]).

I remember the Ray Charles performance from when it first aired - it was memorable for the obvious reasons.
I liked how they were using the musical clips to illustrate the points they were making in the program. For instance, Tom Petty's "Don't Do Me Like That" to illustrate the problems caused by making fun of Silverman (I think it was Silverman, the head of programming at NBC Franken made fun of). On the whole, better than a mere retrospective, it actually had some depth.
Just about everyone else of any significance was represented if they were still alive.
Superstation WGN shows "Best of Soul Train" on Sat mornings (11am Pacific). Vintage eps from the '70s. Today it's one from '74. They just danced to Martha Reeves' cover of Joe Simon's "Power of Love", which apparently charted in '74 but was new to me. And now the Moments, showing much male cleavage in their glittery V-neck costumes, doing "Sexy Mama". "Ahm gonna open up the love-gates to mah heaven..."
Followed by the dancers again, groovin to Al Green's "Let's Get Married". Hoo Lawd!

And now -- TANC -- it's Ecstasy Passion & Pain! and (major revelation) they're NOT 3 women, they're 2 guys and a guitar-playing Gloria Gaynor lookalike. Live'n'learn!
Followed by the Moments again, doing a duet with Sylvia (of "Pillow Talk" fame), who both produced them and owned the label they were on, All-Platinum. Then Don Corlelius introduces another dance segment, gyrating to "For the Love of Money" -- "the O'Jays from Philly, with a sho' 'nuff dilly!" I've gotta remember to watch this every Saturday...

Obscure Beatle Movie Alert!
For those who have FLIX on cable or satellite, they're showing an interesting triple feature tonight starting at 5pm:
How I Won the War Richard Lester's dark WWI comedy featuring John Lennon.
That'll Be the Day, a sort of British American Graffitti about the '50s, with David Essex and Ringo Starr. (the sort-of-sequel, Stardust, is one of the great forgotten films of the '70s.)
Wonderwall, a late-'60s psychological drama with a George Harrison soundtrack.
program your TiVOs accordingly!

So I'm watching That'll Be the Day (not quite what I expected -- kinda downbeat) and what pops up on the soundtrack but the Who's "Long Live Rock", performed by British pop star Billy Fury (as a character in the film), with a band that includes Keith Moon on drums! Apparently Townsend wrote the song for the film (made in '73, a year before the Who's version surfaced on "Odds and Sods"). I never knew that.
Another great Classic Soul Train ep in progress: Al Wilson (in a FAB lavender suit) doing his soundalike follow-up to "Show & Tell", "Touch & Go"; The Natural Four (from the Bay Area!) doing the wonderful "Can This Be Real?"; and Kool & the Gang with "H'wood Swinging". Hey! Hey! Hey!
They seem to be showing these in chronological order -- 3 eps in a row have been from '74.

Heh: Last year I bought it as a bootleg from Midtown Comics for my brother. Worth seeing once (and no more).
the always game Florence Henderson of "The Brady Bunch” is along for the whole shebang. When not singing a disco version of “That Old Black Magic,” she shares a major lip lock with Mr. Lynde, who’s dressed as “very chic sheik” Florence of Arabia.
Were there any gay actors that Ms. Henderson didn’t kiss back then?
last night on VH1, they ran this movie/documentary called "Amazing Journey." I don't know if it's new or old, but I really enjoyed it, and it had no commercials. Some totally classic stuff.

on cable 13, they're showing this summer's concert in the park. Lester Chambers right now doing "Time Has Come Today." My memory is that Joe sang it!
OMFG! for the second year, Channel 32 KMTP is showing "Scrooge's Rockin' Xmas", the Worst. Holiday. Special. EVAH. 3DN, Paul Revere & the Raiders, America, Merilee Rush and others singing holiday tunes while Scrooge (the late Jack Elam) watches them thru a crystal ball. Non-existent production values -- it looks like somebody's community college class project. The true meaning of "camp". Oh how I wish Gaz could see this...
Let me be the first to say that Petty & Co were workmanlike and... dull. Most pedestrian video effects ever. Is my memory playing tricks on me, or did Prince play significantly longer last year than the 12 mins Petty was alotted? Prince remains the SB Halftime champ IMHO.
Oh and Haddaway's very annoying "What is Love?" was used in a very annoying commercial. Commercials underwhelming so far.
Classic Soul Train: Don Cornelius interviews Jacques "Village People" Morali (in fractured, French-accented English), who is promoting Can't Stop The Music! Good luck with that, Jacques. And now it's his other creation, The Ritchie Family (I'd forgotten he did them too), with their flop from the film, "Put Your Feet to the Beat".
a classic Soul Train from late '77: Sister Sledge, pre-Chic, doing a flop ballad called "Baby It's the Rain", new to me. And the ST Dancers are groovin' to Tavares's version of "More Than a Woman".

funkier still: Brick doing their "Dazz" follow-up "Dusic" and the even-better low-charter, "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody".
just kina stumbled onto another PBS music fund raiser I thought I'd seen, but it turns out to be new to me. 60's oddities, like the guy who sang "Green Tambourine", the guy who sang "Kind of a Drag", and Mark Stein from Vanilla Fudge doing "You Keep Me Hanging On." Silly and simoultaneously interesting. Now Iron Butterfly doing "Inna Gadda da Vida"
With the wicked Wilson Pickett yet to come!
This week's Classic Soul Train is from summer '83. Here's Klique doing their excellent cover of Jackie Wilson's "Doggin' Me Around" -- their lead singer Howard Huntsberry actually *played* Wilson in La Bamba.
And yet to come: a pre-diet Jennifer Holliday. And ah am TELLIN' you -- she's not starvin'!
another Classic Soul Train from Spring '83: Con Funk Shun and Angela Bofill. And the dancers are groovin' to Prince's "Little Red Corvette".
Just watched a fine docu on VH-1: "The Night James Brown Saved Boston", about the concert JB gave at Boston Garden the night after MLK's assassination. Worth a look, and they're repeating it at 9pm tonite (and many more times, no doubt). Thanks for the heads-up on this; I'll seek it out!
Oh. My. GAWD. Best "Classic Soul Train" EVAH! A 1974 ep featuring George McCrae, Rufus/Chaka and Billy Preston!! '70s soul heaven. Mr McCrae doing "Rock Your Baby" as I write this, wearing a black, studded ensemble that would make any leatherman jealous.

A 21-year-old, bare-midriffed Chaka doing 2 numbers: "Tell Me Something Good" and "You Got The Love". Lawd! And of course Mr Preston sporting the biggest 'fro in history. A wonderful hour of funky flashbacks.
BTW, I *loved* the Rufus/Chaka song in this week's AT40 countdown. Guess it's time I seek out a comp? Once you get started ...
A Classic Soul Train from '82: Taste of Honey doing their lovely, underappreciated cover of Smokey's "I'll Try Something New". Yet to come: Jeffrey Osbourne, presumably singing "On the Wings of Love".
it's a Classic Soul Train from early '82: Ray Parker Jr (who will surely do "The Other Woman") and Sister Sledge (whose mid-charting remake of "My Guy" was their only record of note at the time).
Oh. My. F---ing. GAWD! A Classic Soul Train from 1980 features Yellow Magic Orchestra, performing their delightfully wacky synth-oriented cover of "Tighten Up"! Haven't heard this in ages; a big "turntable hit" on NY radio at the time, as well a significant club record. Ryuichi Sakamoto in his pre soundtrack-scoring days. Amazing that they got booked on this show. Highlight of my weekend.

Was flippin' through channels and caught the wrap-up of this. I don't remember YMO at all, and the bit of "Tighten Up" I saw was a WTF moment if ever there was one.
Lawd! a Classic Soul Train from late '78 with everyone in full disco regalia and Cheryl Lynn doing "Got to Be Real". And again ah say: Lawd!
A rare late-'80s Classic Soul Train (circa 1988) features the late great Jermaine Stewart doing his shoulda-been-bigger "Say it Again". And yet to come: Pebbles (presumably doing "Mercedes Boy") and the underrated black rock act The Busboys.

Soul Train is on WGN the Chicago Superstation, which is Ch. 33 on Comcast -- they usually run it at 11am Pacific time on Saturday morning (with occasional switches for Cubs or White Sox baseball). Locally, TV 20 (cable 13) runs it at 2am Sat nite/Sun morning.
This week's CST (it was about time for an acronym, no?) is from '77: Enchantment doing the gorgeous ballad "Gloria", with BT Express and someone named Letta Mbulu still to come.
One of the best CSTs evah! Al Green, circa early '74, doing two obscure LP cuts so far (including "Jesus is Waiting" -- and this was pre-grits tragedy). Even with his arm in a sling, still the epitome of sexy.
All this and the post-Curtis M. Impressions too!
Bonus: an appearance by Ecstasy, Passion & Pain!
Bonus: an appearance by Ecstasy, Passion & Pain!
And again may I say that EP&P are most impressive. The lead singer, Barbara Roy, a tall Gloria Gaynor lookalike with a huge 'fro, is also the guitar player. (Don Cornelius to Barbara: "Well, I guess you must be Ecstasy..." LOL!)
Also of note in the Soul Train Dancers segments, 2 then-current singles that never crossed over: Martha Reeves covering Joe Simon's "Power of Love", and an early Herbie Hancock instrumental, "Chameleon".
the Herbie Hancock tune rocks--a great jazz/funk workout from his seminal Head Hunters album, which was covered by several jazz outfits--including Maynard Ferguson!

Sadly, WGN pre-empted CST this week, so I missed out on an ep featuring the Staple Singers.
But VH-1 Soul is repeating their all-Prince-all-the-time weekend; right now it's an hour of "Prince's Women" -- we've had Vanity, Apollonia, and OMFG it's Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls"! and her "Strut" too! I'm awash in delightfully cheezy '80s-ness.

Did you get "Manic Monday"? I went on a Bangles kick yesterday, listening to their greatest-hits comp and marvelling at the Beatliciousness of "Hero Takes a Fall."
Just caught James Taylor on Colbert. I didn't think it was possible for anyone to do a whiter version of Jr Walker's "Shotgun" than Peter Frampton did, but JT managed it.You mean "(I'm A) Roadrunner"

This TV note: catch the series premiere of "Life on Mars" tonight at 10pm (9 Central) on abc. It's about a NYC detective who somehow lands back in 1973. It stars Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli (from The Sopranos), Lisa Bonet and some good early 70's music.

I don't get to watch weeknight TV due to my work schedule; let me know if it's sustained goodness. Thx!

I made a point of watching, though I generally don't watch 10pm shows. It was good, but I wanted to be more impressed. Not sure it was good enough for me to make sure I don't miss next weeks ep. I'll need to find a way to tape it, or maybe find it on demand, because Thursday is softball night, and next week is a 9 oclock game. Not sure why I don't have DVR, but Comcast takes a simple transaction and clouds it in mystery.
I'm currently watching on WLIW a Bill Joel concert on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" from 1978, doing a lot of Stranger songs. I have to admit that, Billy Joel fan though I've been all my life, it's hard for me to enjoy him in the live setting knowing what a pathetically creepy caricature he'd become in his later years.
Also, "Allentown" was orig intended to be part of the "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" suite but got bumped.

Last nite's ep, with Lou Reed was a lot weirder but interesring nenetheless. Artist/director Julian Schnabel (an old friend of Lou's, apparently) showed up in the 2nd half and he's an odd dude.

Super Duper Holiday Cheeze Alert!!
Tonite at 8, SF's KMTP, Ch. 32 (32 on most cable systems too, afaik) is doing their annual showing of "Scrooge's Rock Christmas" -- hands-down the worst Xmas special EVER, cheaply shot (in the early '80s) on video that looks like it's somebody's Community College senior project, and featuring then-washed-up acts like The Association, Paul Revere's Raiders, and Bobby Goldsboro (wearing Tony Orlando's hair) lip-synching holiday tunes in the snow. It has to be seen to be believed -- you won't be sorry. Jaw-droppingly bad. Don't miss it!

you had me at "duper" -- thanks for the tip!
Super Duper Holiday Cheeze Alert!!pretty embarrassing so far. Three Dog Night lip synched "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" on a hillside in what looked like a miserable snow shower. Chuck Negron absolutely did NOT want to be there, even though his hair-sprayed mullet helmet was keeping the snow at bay. And the snow was piling up on his 70s porno mustache to great effect. Danny and Corey were game, and the three babes they brought out to dance awkwardly with them seemed up to it, too. But Chuck was going crazy looking at all that *snow*, thinking "man, this is NOT my kind of snow."

I couldn't tell the members of Association if I had to, but it seems like they have all their orig members according to a great review of this thing on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/review/product/6303237193/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1). The Asian dude songs lead on Home For The Holidays.
I've always liked them.
Bobby Goldsboro sings Winter Wonderland and comes up to a snow woman and does that sexy hourglass-figure gesture w his hands If he hadn't lost his virginity already ... well, who knows what would've happened....?
But the Rocky & Bullwinkle thing on KOFY is pretty swell.
I'm glad someone besides me has finally seen this thing -- This was my 4th time; I've described it to people and they think I hallucinated it.
Caught the latest Elvis C episode on Sundance last nite, with the Police. Nice stuff. Next week: Rufus Wainwright.
EC: "So Rufus, I hear yer a bit of a poof."
Anyone else watching the Grammys tonight? Poor Whitney - why did she even take the stage in that condition?

Thanks for the heads-up! (Only the Oscars and the Super Bowl are live to us West Coasters.) I'll watch the first hour or so just to see what you're talking about. I'm watching the BAFTAs now. One of the winners was a guy named Steve McQueen -- who turned out to be a black Scotsman! And they just gave their version of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Terry Gilliam.

Just saw it -- yikes. The woman cain't help herself.
But (except for U2, who I kinda dug in an over-the-top way, and now I know what the lyrics are to that "Boots" song) the entire first 10 minutes was craptastic. Jennifer Hudson proving that a death in the family guarantees a win (Raphael Saddiq wuz robbed!); Dwayne Johnson -- WTF?; and will somebody please tell me why people love Justin Timberlake? Let Al Green sing the song his own damn self. Oh, and BoyzIIMen did an album of Motown covers? Did anyone actually buy it?
And coming up: Kid Rock! Miley Cyrus! Sheesh. I'm outta here.
WTF?; and will somebody please tell me why people love Justin Timberlake? Let Al Green sing the song his own damn self.

Apparently that was a last second switch. Rihanna was supposed to be in that slot, and her boyfriend Chris Brown was supposed to be on later, but both cancelled less than an hour before, because he got himself in police custody after assault charges were filed against him. Late breaking news didn't say whom he assaulted, or exactly why Rihanna no-showed, or if the two things were related. I'm sure when I wake up in the morning it will be all over the news.
So in that case I'm willing to cut Timberlake some slack.
I'm sickened by this news - Rihanna used to be a semi-regular at the restaurant my ex-roommate used to work at, and he got to know her a bit over several months. I met her once there - she was genuinely friendly and downright radiant. Hate to think that anyone might have raised a hand to her in violence.

I'm watching the Elvis C show on Sundance Channel (this week's guests include Zooey Deschanel and Jakob Dylan) and he opened with a very cool cover of the Dan's "Show Biz Kids" -- appropriate, given Zooey's and Jakob's lineage.I got the same Ronstadt vibe, especially in the kind of dress she was wearing. I really dug the father/daughter drum duo as well.
Zooey Deschanel is also 1/2 of the duo She & Him, and watching her sing, I thought, "she should *totally* star in a Linda Ronstadt biopic!"

Tonite at 9 on VH-1, part 1 of their 4-part series "Black to the Future", about black contributions to pop culture. Tonite's episode is about the '70s! I am totally there.
Apparently there's a fabulous Stax/Volt Revue show that PBS stations are showing this month -- not one of those oldies packages, this is vintage late-'60s footage not seen in decades. Something to watch out for.

Didn't I post about this last week someplace? If I didn't I meant to. It aired here last week. Shot in '67 in Oslo Norway, features Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Arthur Conley, possibly the Mar-keys but I missed them if it did. And Booker T. and the MGs & the Memphis Horns backing everyone. Definitely worth seeing and even worth enduring the pledge breaks.
If you missed the "season premiere" of South Park last nite, catch the replay this evening. Great send-up of the Jonas Bros, Disney and purity rings.
anyone watching Idol? My wife & kids are into it, and so I can't entirely avoid it. Tuesday night Paula had some horrible makeup mishap & was acting quite eratic. If I cared more I suppose I'd google to see if the blogosphere had the same take, but really I don't. Bashing her here is as far as I'm willing to go. ;D

I saw some of the beginning before switching over to "Life on Mars" (which I would also recommend to viewers -- cool show, great music). Funny stuff. On the other hand, I am so out of the loop on the Jonas Brothers that I can't really relate on that level.

you know about the "sequel" to Life on mars, Ashes to Ashes, on BBC America? (I Guess as long as Bowie keeps making music, they'll have sequel titles...)
For those with VH-1 Soul on their cable system: they're doing a 5-hour special tonite (7-midnite) called "New Jack Swing A-to-Z" with NJS videos presumably in alpha order.Oh wow, this could be fun. Post any highlights!

been watching on Palladia HD channel, and it's pretty darned impressive, if you go for that sort of thing. Lots of cool stuff: last live performance of the late Richard Wright (couldn't help but feel sad during "Time" lyrics); glass harmonica intro to "Shine on You Crazy Diamond"; lots of great arching guitar solos for us guitar geeks; Phil Manzanera, Dick Parry, Guy Pratt; Polish symphony; Astronomy Dominie, and so on. Martha said it all tends to sound the same, and I imagine it does!

Green Day lashes out at Wal-Mart policy
"Wal-Mart's become the biggest retail outlet in the country, but they won't carry our record because they wanted us to censor it," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said in a recent interview.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/05/21/entertainment/e043414D72.DTL
In the past three months, Bruce Springsteen has been bashed for releasing a Greatest Hits album (with no new music) exclusively for WalMart, playing the Super Bowl halftime program, and for the way that Ticketmaster scalped his tickets.
No way to feel sorry for Bruce. He struck back against Ticketmaster on his website and manager Jon Landau was one of the few who dared speak about the practice of artists scalping their own tickets. The Super Bowl gig was at least an entertainment success, even if one didnt agree that th four song progression represented a journey through the bands story my story everybodys story the end of the story (but not yet), as Springsteen described it. Even with
WalMart, Springsteen responded graciously. We just dropped the ball on it.. given its [Wal-Mart's] labor history, it was something that if we'd thought about it a little longer, we'd have done something different. It was a mistake. Our batting average is usually very good, but we missed that one. Fans will call you on that stuff, as it should be.
WalMarts labor practices are repugnant. But so are, for instance, those of Target, which pays its entry-level employees just as badly and makes it even more difficult for them to acquire health care. WalMart is notoriously anti-union but Target also says it "simply doesn't believe that third-party representation would add anything for our customers, our employees or our shareholders.
The fact is that there are no chains that welcome unions, treat their employees fairly, provide just health care or use U.S. labor where producing outside the U.S. saves money. This doesnt mean that WalMart is unfairly singled out; it means that hip Target gets away with all kinds of inequity. So Springsteen is berated for the WalMart
deal, which involved an exclusive album, Essential Vol. 3, that held no new gems. Yet the exclusive deals of Bob Dylan, U2 and Prince with Target are ignored.
In fact, theres been virtually no criticism of the Eagles, who gave their most recent album Long Road Out of Eden to WalMart as a one year exclusive. (They sold seven million copies.) Nor have we heard a peep about the deal Russell Simmons just struck to distribute his American Classic clothing line exclusively with WalMart. Yet both the Eagles and Simmons are music world activists, too.
We also cant find any discussion of those who shop at WalMart because they mustbecause almost every other retailer in their community has been driven out of business. This is regarded as bad for small business, but rarely mentioned is the fact that its also an impossible situation for citizens.
What is needed is a program of opposition to all such employers which includes many much smaller businessesaccompanied by a rise in union organizing, worker militance, and strong support in the media that proclaims itself on the workers side. If there is to be a consumer boycott of WalMart, it needs to coalesce and make itself heard on a steady basis. The several unions involved in trying to organize at WalMart need to form a coalition instead of competing
against each other.
If there is to be a supplier boycott of WalMartif Sony, which distributes Springsteen, is to avoid doing business with the company that sells 15 percent of all records in the U.S.then even harder work must be done.
Bruce Springsteen is a perfectionist artist with a perfectionist audience that made sure he got set straight PDQ on this matter. But that doesnt mean erasing thirty years of credit for using his reputation and his music to help working people. It means facing up to the challenge of creating an environment thats better for workers everywhere. Superstars wont do that for uswell do it for ourselves or it wont get done.

For those with Comcast cable's ON-Demand option, I saw a terrific thing last night called Passing Strange. It is a rock/blues/soul musical that ran on B'way for a year or so. Spike lee saw it and loved it, so he filmed several performances and edited them together into a cohesive whole. Basically the life story of the guy who wrote it, who calls himself simply "Stew" -- he grew up in LA in the '70s, ran away from home to live in Europe (first Amsterdam for the drugs and then Berlin, where he became the token black American in a political art commune). Really wonderful music and performances; I can't imagine anyone here who wouldn't like it. I could've seen it in NYC my last 2 trips east and now I'm kinda sorry I didn't. Highly recommended, and I assume it will be out on DVD shortly.

Not only did you miss it in NY, you missed it in Berkeley (but so did I). It made its debut at Berkeley Rep in 2006.
Just watched the clip of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys doing "Empire State of Mind" before last nite's WS Game 2 -- is that the first time a rap number has been performed at a Series game? It struck me as pretty awful, but then I'm no fan. And who will the Phillies counter with tomorrow?

to promote the video game? How sad. How can that video game be entertaining? how many different ways are there to scratch vinyl?

I would bet money that Channel 32 KMTP will show it again -- they seem to own the only existing copy, and it ain't on YouTube. Probably in their Sunday nite @ 8pm Movie slot sometime this month. It is truly awesomely awful.

Dunno how much that will cost (or what other channels it gets you -- does DTV have "tiers" and "packages" like cable does?) but its a fine fine show. And Sundance shows a lot of indie & foreign films nobody else does.

For those with TCM on cable, they're showing Performance tonite (11 Pacific, 2am Eastern), the bizarre Nicholas Roeg film with Mick Jagger doing "Memo From Turner" and other delights. I've always found it kind of overrated, but worth a look if you've never seen it.I recommend it too, but then again, I think Putney Swope is a great movie!

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/12/09/DD0M1B0JLB.DTL
And I'm seriously considering upping my DirecTV package to get Sundance, simply for this show.
Dunno how much that will cost (or what other channels it gets you -- does DTV have "tiers" and "packages" like cable does?) but its a fine fine show. And Sundance shows a lot of indie & foreign films nobody else does.
for OnDemand, look for "TV Entertainment", and under that there's a "Sundance" option; they actually offfer the show a week ahead of the air date.
if you notice any TV station will be broadcasting Scrooge's Rock n ' Roll Christmas, one of the fascinatingly crappiest tv specials ever, please post the info here! Mike turned me onto this last year, and I want to see it again.
I would bet money that Channel 32 KMTP will show it again -- they seem to own the only existing copy, and it ain't on YouTube. Probably in their Sunday nite @ 8pm Movie slot sometime this month. It is truly awesomely awful.

Comcast's program grid shows KMPT (channel 32) with something called "Scrooge" at 8pm tonite (Sun 12/20) -- but no description of what it is. So it *could* be Scrooge's Rock n ' Roll Christmas, or it could be some other cheapass version of "A Christmas Carol". So check it out!

I'm bummed -- still possible they could show it next Sunday, I suppose. Or sometime during the week.
Watching CNN. They're playing "Imagine" in Times Square prior to the ball drop. Kathy Griffin really needs to shut up for 5 minutes.

Standing by for the 'oo!
Note that when "My Generation" came out in '65, people the same age as the Who are now were born in 1900.Standing by for the 'oo!Easily the geezer-y-est of all the post-"wardrobe malfunction" SBHT acts.
I didn't know this, but some friends said they were CSI theme songs, which are on CBS!Standing by for the 'oo!
er, this is pretty bad, folks. Easily the geezer-y-est of all the post-"wardrobe malfunction" SBHT acts. Kinda sad. "Who Are You?" indeed.

wow, those reviews are overly kind, IMHO. And geoff, I'd forgotten about the CBS connection -- that probably played a part in selecting the Who this year. I'm sure it made the "suits" happy. I think we've seen the last of "geezer rock" at the SB. For one thing, there's nobody left of that stature who hasn't done it yet (except maybe the Police). Next year the game is in Dallas; i predict something countrified. Whether they go for one big name (Kenny Chesney?) or do some sort of Carrie Underwear/Rascal Flatts/Sugarland combo platter remains to be seen. OTOH, there's always Coldplay. ::)

Could they carry a full set by themselves, or would they get guest appearances? (John Mayer? Willie Nelson? Uncle Kracker?)
If you have VH1 Classic, they've been showing a program titled "Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America". I don't know how old this is but it's getting a long run. I've seen it in the program guide about 3-4 times already. It's on Thursday afternoon at 3 PM and Saturday at 5:30 PM.

I watched about 10 minutes of it the other night. It was pretty cool in it's Rock Doc way, but it was alreay after 11 on a school night so I had to bail ... Saw a clip of the one time Don actually danced down the line.

Just watched it -- great stuff. The old clips (Al Green! JB! Marvin! J-5!) are just golden. Trvia: First white arist to appear on ST was... Gino Vanelli! Now if VH-1 would start showing the old episodes, I'd be in heaven.
I didn't know David Bowie (who said he almost forgot the words to his song while he was lip syncing) and Elton John were both on ST.

Two years ago at the EMP Pop Conference, conf organizer and music journo Eric Weisbard gave a talk on the improbability of "Bennie and the Jets" becoming an R&B hit. IIRC, it amounted to, one station dug it and it snowballed. He showed the ST clip.

was the station WBLS? because their PD Frankie Crocker was famous for that sort of thing -- in their '80s heyday, 'BLS played Dolly Parton's "Potential New Boyfriend" (!) and the Who's "Eminence Front" (!!) as well as breaking Brit New Wavers like Human League and Haircut 100.

Is "Triple Scale Tommy" still playing sessions? If so, he's gotta be getting up there. He was a contemporary of Hal Blaine and the Wrecking Crew, if not a member thereof.
I'm watching Bad Company in concert on Palladium right now. Paul Rodgers is much more talented than I ever gave him credit for. I can totally see him fronting Queen now.

As if that commercial isn't enuf of an abomination, Megan Mullaly has quit the upcoming B'way revival of Terence Mcnally's "Lips Together, Teeth Apart" becaue they refused to fire her co-star, Patton Oswalt, who she apparently thought was terrible (it's his first appearance ina play, apparently). yes -- one of my fave movies of last year. The homo subtext seemed pretty obvious to me but few critics seemed to pick up on it.
LAWD! it's official -- the Centric channel is on Comcast (ch. 474) as of today. Classic Soul Train every nite at 9! We're in the middle of an early-'73 ep with a very young and sexy Al Green and Mel & Tim. Heaven.

Watching a Miami Vice rerun on Centric ... just my luck, it's the episode that introduced us to Glenn Frey's "You Belong to the City". But it does have a young and foxy Pam Grier.

I ran across that a while back--just proves he's a much of a whore as anyone. But the commercials (there are several) are pretty funny.
according to a tip over at the other AT40 message board, tonite's classic Soul Train is the VERY FIRST EPISODE from 1971; Honey Cone and Gladys & the Pips are the guests. Can't wait.

Holy flaming mutha -- amazing. Honey Cone at the very top of the show, doing "Want Ads", and they're singing live, not lip-synching. And then Eddie Kendricks came out and sang a song I couldn't ID; something from his first solo LP, 2 years before he hit with "Keep on Truckin". Can't wait to see what's next.
Gladys & Co appear to do "PolygamyFriendship Train". Then return to sit in the "Soul Train Hot Seat", an interview segment. And lawdy, here's "I Don't Wanna Do Wrong", one of my 2 or 3 fave perfs of Ms Knight's. I just can't HELP mahself!
Then, after a demonstration of how to do the funky breakdown, Honey Cone return for "Stick Up" -- I'll wear a smile down the aisle, 'cause he's the father of mah child!

But not a real green suit, 'cuz that's cruel.
the basic concept of the show was clichéd, but still riveting. The clips are awesome documents. I enjoyed watching Otis Redding, and seeing a young Duck Dunn and Steve Cropper riffing behind him, for example.

Damn -- this show is awesome! The clips are wonderful. Johnnie Taylor doing "Who's Makin' Love?" in the greenest green suit I have ever seen. Ree-Ree looks a bit worse-for-wear, esp contrasted to her '60s self doing "Say a Little Prayer" in a rainbow mini-dress.
This was surreal...

I guess they ran out of old-fart classic rockers.
Man-boobs before anybody called 'em that.
For those who didn't know, Macca is hosting SNL tomo'w nite. Please, Sir Paul: anything but "Wonderful Christmastime"Last night on Jimmy Fallon Show, McCartney performed "Scrambled Eggs" version of "Yesterday." Jimmy did a great job singing with Paul and adding harmonies. You can tell it was the thrill of his lifetime to actually sing with Sir Paul. Paul also performed "Here Today," his tribute to John:

known to gay guys as Matthew BONER, after he was outed on the internets last year ;)
Just catching up on some old threads here...but did anyone else happen to catch the Kennedy Center Honors on CBS a couple weeks ago?
We tuned in midway, but caught the tributes to Jerry Herman* ("Hello, Dolly!", "Mame," and "La Cage aux Folles", etc. Broadway), Merle Haggard, and Sir Paul. Oprah Winfrey was also honored but we didn't catch her tribute. But up in the balcony box for all the honorees, Sir Paul was bracketed by Oprah on hi sright & Michelle Obama to his left (with the Prez on the other side of her...and Colin Powell on the other side of him). Oprah & Michelle were enthusiastic singer-alongers, Macca pretty much (even to the Haggard tunes!) & Barack...less so.

Meanwhile, "twilight's last REAMING", eh Christina? Then that really *was* the gayest National Anthem at the Super Bowl since Cher sang it in 1999!
In addition to Mick Jagger, la Streisand is also performing on the Grammys this Sun. And they're doing a salute to Aretha with Jennifer Hudson and (yes) Christina Aguilera -- hope she remembers how to spell R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Perhaps it was more serious than when first reported. Initially it seemed to be a case of nerves, but if neurological, then of course we hope she gets proper diagnosis and care.I saw this on your FB page. It's weird how she's rambling on, like maybe she's verbally drunk but still has complete motor control. The paramedics checked her vitals last night and she got a ride home that night from a friend, but I see she was admitted to a hospital today. No word on whether they found anything amiss. “I am a little surprised (they didn't admit her last night),” Dr. John Krakauer, associate professor of neurology and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, told CBS News. “Frankly, I would have admitted her.”
Dr. Krakauer, who is not involved in Branson’s care, said that Branson might have suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA), a sort of “mini-stroke” that causes only transient problems. Some patients who are seen at a hospital for a TIA are allowed to go home without being admitted, he said.
He said it was also possible that Branson had suffered a seizure or experienced a rare condition associated with migraine headaches.

And speaking of the anthem, The LA Kngs have had Davis Gaines doing the anthem during the playoffs -- very histrionic (as befits a guy who played the title role in Phantom of the Opera for years) and over-the-top. But he seems to be wearing a wedding ring on his "gay" hand. Hrm.

Just when you thought PBS had run out of artists to do pledge-month clip-shows about... KCSM is showing their latest, a Jim Croce compilation. Sure to been seen many more times in the next month. Some nice vintage clips from back in his too-brief heyday.
Highlight: "Lover's Cross", one of my favorite songs of his. Melanie did a lovely cover of it the year after his death that should've been a big hit.

Gaz turns 40 in December; Rad is definitely the youngster in the bunch.

Tweet of the day (from an unidentified Twitter user): “Comparing Obama to Hitler is almost as crazy as comparing Hank Williams Jr to his much, much more talented father.”
I wonder what Big Rick had to say about his boy Hank Jr?
Just watched the entire (3-1/2 hour) Scorsese George Harrison docu. Well worth your time. Don't go in expecting a straightforward bio -- it's rather collage-y, but lots of wonderful stuff.

Watching the Sharks/Canucks game; the arena in Vancouver appears to have an actual organist (well, hey, it's Canada, eh?) and he's playing snippets from songs like "Seven Nation Army". What, no Rush?

one says "It was Steven Tyler doing what he does perfectly, what's the fuss?"
the other says "That old lady forget the words and screeched. WTF?"

This latest PBS oldies-fest -- '50s and early '60s, hosted by Ronnie Spector and Jon "Bowzer" Bowman -- is a tad depressing because some of these folks are REALLY old. Jay Black can still sing but he looks every year of his age (73) and then some.
I commented earlier on FB about a Smokey Robinson show on KRCB -- Gwen Ifill interviewed him (circa 2009) and Teena Marie, Howard Hewitt and Musiq Soulchild sang some of his songs. That was followed by another more recent hour where Gwen interviewed Valerie Simpson and Patti Austin sang Ashford & Simpson songs. Nice Stuff.saw most of the Valerie Simpson show. Definitely a different sort of TV show. Nice stuff indeed.
For those (like me) who missed the Hendrix documentary on PBS last night, it's available here:
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/jimi-hendrix/film-jimi-hendrix-hear-my-train-a-comin/2756/
Interesting that the doc seems to be sponsored by Goldman Sachs (online anyway) because when I think Hendrix, Goldman is not the first thing that comes to mind. Although you could say that Goldman are the Jimi Hendrix of financial thievery.
Anybody watch Austin City Limits on PBS these days?
Everything old is new again... ACL has been featuring a lot of "Americana," which I guess is
shorter way of saying "we didn't know enough people to start a whole bluegrass group."
Americana or not, a lot of the contemporary stuff I hear on the show doesn't really impress me.
Not that it's bad, per se, but it's not something new and interesting, nor does it compare in
musical excellence to the best from the past.
One big exception is Sarah Jarosz. She recently made her second appearance on ACL and
I was not disappointed. I really enjoy her material and she, as well as her bandmates, seem
to be excellent musicians.
American Masters: Janis Joplin (http://www.kqed.org/tv/programs/index.jsp?pgmid=23409)We saw these, and it just reinforces the feeling that Janis was one of a kind. I miss her very much.
Episode #2706 Duration: 1:56:40 STEREO TV14-L (Secondary audio: none)
Observe Janis Joplin's life through intimate letters and rare footage in the first in-depth celebration of the
iconic rock singer. Director Amy Berg presents a portrait of a complicated, driven, often beleaguered artist.
Chan Marshall narrates.
If the remaining episodes are as good as the first, this series will be well worth watching -- load
up your DVR.
We've been watching it every night (or at least every night after we've DVR'ed it!) and it's been really good. As someone who is somewhat knowledgeable about some of this, I find it very real and believable, but it also takes me outside of my comfortable little box, and updates me on things too.If the remaining episodes are as good as the first, this series will be well worth watching -- load

Thanks Dischead. I just set my dvr!

I apologize. I thought about posting a note but didn't. Like most PBS programs, it will very likely
air again in months ahead, perhaps even over the winter holidays. If I see it again I'll mention it.

American Masters: Jimi Hendrix Duration: 1:56:07 STEREO TV14
Considered a pioneering electric guitarist, one of the most influential in the history of popular
music, Jimi Hendrix only had four years of mainstream exposure and recognition, but his music
and riveting stage presence left an enormous, enduring legacy. Tracing his roots from Seattle
to international stardom, this is his definitive story, illustrated by interviews with Hendrix at
venues such as the Miami Pop Festival and illuminated with commentary by Paul McCartney,
Noel Redding, Billy Cox, Eddie Kramer and others. Poignant, protected footage from his final
performance in Germany in September 1970, just 12 days before his tragic drug-related death
at age 27, concludes the film. In what would have been his 70th year, the Hendrix estate has
cooperated fully with this film, releasing closely held performance footage that has, literally,
never been seen before as well as an extensive archive of photographs, drawings and family
letters.
