No, I meant whatever beame of that American band called The Beat (apparently they or their record company had threatened the English Beat with legal action). I think they split after one LP.

The Charlatans UK I imagine outlived tha original Charlatans, Grateful Dead had to change their name from The Warlocks.  There's probably a pretty long list of bands how had to change their names who outlasted the originals.

Not quite. They were also known as Paul Collins' Beat, started here in SF but moved to LA, and put out two albums and an EP but never quite caught on, here or elsewhere. Their AMG bio makes ref to their forcing the other Beat to declare their nationality, but also calls their albums "power pop classics."

P.S.  Not apropos of this topic, but Bob Christgau reviews the new biography on Sylvester in this week's Village Voice.  Xgau's summary is interesting but I think I'll skip the book: it's 300 pages, and no one needs that much Sylvester.  (Except, perhaps, for the choir member who deflowered Syl when the kid was 8.)
