Lay requires an object, so he should (if I read his intent correctly) say, "Lay yourself across my big brass bed."  And start unbuttoning while you're at it.

Ali, I don't just speak English, I teach it.

ok, well it's implied. :) which word is used to give a direct order?

And BOS2: Tull, Nothing is Easy. I suspect Rod will concur.

Yes the Tull was tasty, and this is a favorite Zep tune.  So I'm torn.  Pleasantly so.

WOS (and Worst Grammar of Set, too): "Lay Lady Lay."  Bobby, I have no idea what you were thinking; record-buyers of America, same.

Guess that makes Bob the original rapper!

By virtue of bad grammar?

i think that's "gramma." i can never keep the lay/lie thing straight.

Mshray the grammarian to the rescue!

"Lie" is an intransitive verb, meaning it can NOT take a direct object.  It's past tense form is "lay" & past participle is "lain".

"Lay in a transitive verb, meaning it MUST take a direct object.  It's past tense form is "laid" & past participle is "laid".

so if bob was telling someone to "lay lady, lay" that would be correct? but since he's singing, "lay, lady, lay," it's incorrect? he should be singing, "lie, lady, lie?"

what an awful rhyme that would make.

Lay requires an object, so he should (if I read his intent correctly) say, "Lay yourself across my big brass bed."  And start unbuttoning while you're at it.

Dude, that's one profound difference between you and me. I know the difference, but I'll be damned if I could have explained it.

BOS3 for the Zep tune (just to stay on topic). Have we heard this before?
Let's get right to it.

Either one.  Any verb can be used in the imperative (order giving) voice.

But while you can say "Run!", it doesn't make any sense to say "Put!"  "Put" requires an object..."Put your clothes away!"

so dylan isn't using bad grammar, after all. he's giving a direct order.
