Just caught Rick James' Bustin' Out on KPOO.
And some slightly suggestive r&b before the hour: Screamin' Jay's Constipation Blues, Little Willie John's Leave My Kitten Alone, a few others.
ETA: I think it's a Rick twin-spin! Can't tell ya the name of this second song tho.

and that classic, "Constipated Kitten Blues"
Are we saluting a particular year today? 'cause that 1984 show last week was slammin'.

Don't think so, but he's playing the Chevy Chase/Richard Pryor word-association routine from SNL--a classic, and something we'll NEVER hear on 10@10.

Indeed, and I have that SNL album (came out in '77 I think) and you'd think Dave would have it too and use it regularly (especially since we know he loved Gilda R). It includes such gems as "Shimmer" (it's a floor wax! it's a dessert topping!) and "Chevy's Girls" sung by Gilda, Jane & Laraine.
-
OMG! "Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet" by Gonzalez. Dave actually played this... once. It's the loooong version too!
-
OMG2! Giorgio Moroder, "Chase". Maybe this is a 1979 thang today. The songs I've recognized have been from that year.
-
best KPOO flashback of the afternoon: Rose Royce, "Is it Love You're After (or Just a Good Time)?"
-
CG's website is down, so I'm SmoothFM-ing. Samantha Sang (and the world listened), "Emotion", followed by -- OMG! -- the Jackson 5's "Skywriter", which I haven't heard since the '70s, probably.
-
Wow, now it's Donna Summer's Phil Spector send-up/hommage, "Love's Unkind". Fab. Yoo. Luss.
-
another gem: Climie/Fisher, "Love Changes Everything". Best. Rod. Stewart. Imitation. Evah!

Listening to Capital Gold today for the first time in ages, while I work on some Voice scribblings. Tuned in just in time for MJ's "Beat It," and I must say, it's refreshing to deal with MJ unironically and on a solely musical basis. If he wants to rehabilitate his image in the U.S., really, all he needs to do is a "hits" tour. Not co-write a benefit song with a sultan. Why does he not get this?

Because he's living in a fantasy world. He's beyond help.
Dean promises to play Sheena Easton "Morning Train" (or "9 to 5" as the Brits know it), which would've livened up today's '81 set. And next: "Pass the Dutchie"!
Deese generation... rules de nation...
-
Sheena Easton, "Morning Train"! My afternoon is redeemed! :D :D :D

"Morning Train" (or "9 to 5" as the Brits know it)
I remember the title changing mid-chart-run when Dolly's "9 to 5" hit hard. I was rooting for Sheena while my brother was rooting for Hall & Oates's "Kiss On My List" for chart dominance. Both eventually hit #1, so we both won.

Sheena Easton: the Petula Clark of the '80s.
-
The Herd (?), "I Don't Wan't Our Loving to Die", from '68. New to me.

OMG! the ED&JFC cover of Todd/Utopia's "Love is the Answer". Quite nice.

Yes indeed. Elements of this set really reflect what 1980 sounded like to me. And I do wish people still wrote and performed songs like this today.

Hope you stuck around long enough to hear Cher do "Bang Bang".

I'm still here, yup. And now, the dud of a Madonna single, "Hung Up." If I want to listen to ABBA, I'll listen to ABBA, thanks.

Amen, brother.
Madge: "Oh I know -- I'll use an ABBA sample! the queens'll just eat it up!"

Too bad poc is missing this CG discussion of attractive older women. Lulu was mentioned!
-
Switched to WLNG in time for "Song Sung Blue". Mr Diamond's new Rick Rubin-produced CD got a nice review in EW.
-
WLNG Nugget o' the Day: Sergio Mendes/Brazil '66, "Scarborough Fair".

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to help me find a radio station that plays this kind of rhythmic easy listening. Free Design's another good example, I suppose I'd put Herb Alpert in the category as well. Is there a name for the subgenre? (At least, I'd think it a subgenre of Sunshine Pop.)
-
on WLNG: CG fave "Love Me For a Reason", proof the Osmonds could make a really good record when they put their collective Mormon minds to it.
-
WLNG Nugget o'the Day: Marilyn McCoo (and Billy Davis too!), "You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)".
-
a fab CGSS today, and here's Tavares, "Whodunnit?", which I almost requested from Dave today, but which I doubt he'd've played.
"it's up against the wall... you all!"
-
Dayum! Bobby Womack, "I Can Understand It" Can YOU understand it?
-
WLNG Nugget o' the Day: El De Barge, "Who's Johnny?"
