OMG, Miss Ross (she da Boss) with the loooooooong version of "Ain't No Mountain."  Spectactularly overwrought, and just plain spectacular.

ending with Teddy "Close the Door"

This has been an excellent experience, not the normal KFRC Motown-Monday clichés.

ETA: and it continues with Drifters, as I tune in KFOG...

Marilyn just ended her show with the original version of Rubber Biscuit, which I know from the Blues Brothers cover from the late 70s. Aykroyd and Belushi didn't really take too many liberties--the original sounded almost the same as the cover. One question: what's a "coolwater sandwich and a Sunday-go-to-meetin' bun"?

Bam-a-lam! "Black Betty" makes her 2nd appearance of the week -- the short version this time. This was actually a UK hit twice: first in '77, when it hit #7, and again in a "remix" in 1990 when it got to #13. (In America it only reached #18.)

here's a rarity: Crispian St Peters (of "I'm the Pied Piper" fame) doing the UK hit version of "You Were on My Mind", an American hit for the We Five.
New to me, and a little less "poppy" than the version we're used to.

I've long been curious to hear that.  Forget where I heard about it, though.  Thanks for the relay.

just switched over to VIP in time for -- Babs, "Stoney End"!!  OMFG!  Still a fabulous pop single (it would've made today's wonderful '71 set even moreso) and a revelation at the time, especially to 15-year-olds like me who thought Streisand was an old lady who appealed to even older ladies.

ETA: followed by, OMFG2, Lulu, "Leave a Little Love".

Miss Ross (she da Boss) with "My Old Piano". An odd lyric, this, comparing her lover to a piano -- he has "an 88-key smile" (!) and is, of course, "grand".

JJ on KPOO never fails to amaze me with something I've never heard before and tonite it's "You Can't Hide Love", an R&B mid-charter in 1973 for Creative Source.  Three years later, as "Can't Hide Love" (without the "You"), it would be a hit for Earth Wind & Fire -- I never knew EWF's was a cover!

And now here's Main Ingredient, 2 years before "Everybody Plays the Fool", covering Curtis Mayfield's "I'm So Proud".

Followed by Gene Chandler's groovy "Groovy Situation". Canyadigit canyadigit canyadigit canyadigit?

Little Steven's show has just begun: it's his annual salute to "Louie, Louie" -- the birth of Garage Rock AND Frat Rock ("garage rock's inbred, less intelligent brother" sez Steven) in one fell swoop!

First movie clip of the evening (was there any doubt?):

"Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son."
