Of course, I didn't hear the Charles Brown version until decades later -- when the Eagles came out with their cover of "Please Come Home For Xmas", I at first assumed they were ripping off the Beatles!

This is the first time I've ever heard "Abergavenny" on the radio. I own it on a bubblegum compilation.

It pops up on WLNG occasionally (bless them -- you really should put them in your streaming rotation, Gaz) and of course on CG. But it's an ATBB as far as 10@10 is concerned.

Forgot to comment on this since I missed most of the set, but I've actually been to Abergavenny. Small town in the southeast of Wales. We passed thru there en route to Brecon Beacon Nat'l Park when we were in England two years ago. Lovely little town, had a great lunch and a couple of pints in a local.

That's awesome. I did the exact same thing (great lunch and a couple of pints in a local) in Tehachapi last year, had long since done it in Tuscon, and now have only Tonapah & Tucumcari left on that list.

I've been to Tonopah, NV, former home of the Stealth fighter, but I understand there's also a Tonopah, AZ. Does anyone know which one is in the song?

I always assumed it was Tonopah Nevada, but I didn't know Arizona had one, too. Maybe a look at a US highway map could shed some light....

I love that even Wikipedia can't make up its mind which one it is. Maybe some weed, whites and wine will help.

Tonopah, NV fits with the "I've been to everywhere" theme in that it's on a desolate offshoot of the officially desolate Hwy 50 "The Loneliest Highway in America"

What on earth are you guys talking about? ???

What on earth are you guys talking about? ???
as John McEnroe would say: "You CANNOT be serious!"

What on earth are you guys talking about? ???
Tonopah's current fame rests largely on the reference to it in the chorus of the song "Willin'" by Lowell George of Little Feat on the albums Little Feat,Sailin' Shoes and Waiting for Columbus:
And I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari, Tehachapi to Tonopah.
I've driven every kind of rig that's ever been made;
driven the backroads so I wouldn't get weighed.

Thanks, Geoff. (Yes, I was very serious - I listen to very little Little Feat, and have certainly never paid attention to any lyrics apart from the one about the bad cocaine.)

To the consternation of purists, I would credit Linda Ronstadt for bringing this song to a wider audience.

My brother Chris & I have always talked about hitting all the spots in this song. He's already got a photo of himself 'standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.'
