Perhaps with a super-strong year like 1970 it's almost impossible to fuck it up. But with the
usual haphazard effort, a potentially excellent set can be avoided and an largly ordinary,
slightly better-than-average one supplied instead. Which is what we got today.
In principle, I don't object to repeating 1970 within a week's time, or even 1993, for that matter.
A truly random "big wheel" would produce such a result occasionally. But to do so would require,
at bare minimum, not repeating songs. It just looks like shoddy work when that happens.
I liked last Friday's 1970 set much better. Although most of today's songs were great, their
impact was diminished by their overexposure. More than anything, they hinted at the better
choices that could have been.
1. Mississippi Queen-Mountain
Completely LN. Sadly, the only Mountain song that ever gets played today. How about
Theme For An Imaginary Western, to pick but one great alternative. Yet another band
that I'd like to hear more of on 10@10.
2. Burn Down the Mission-Elton John
A great song, yes, but not only did it just appear last Friday on 10@10, I think it's been getting
more play recently in general. Or maybe I just imagined I've heard it... But it's EJ, for goodness
sake, so there's a plethora of tracks to chose from... how about
Amoreena?3. Ball of Confusion-The Temptations
Another frequent flyer.
4. Glad-Traffic
Yet another KFOG FF.
5. Water Song-Hot Tuna
Wow, did no one catch this? It's from
Burgers, released in 1972! (And still another KFOG FF.)
6. Ain't No Mountain High Enough-Diana Ross
An acceptable choice. Not a bust-out, but not a FF either.
7. Closer to Home-Grand Funk Railroad
Another song that seems to have slipped into occasional play in recent months. It appeared
on 10@10 in mid-March. This is the kind of song that is too easily over-played.
8. Let's Work Together-Canned Heat
Still yet another frequent flyer again.
9.When I'm Dead and Gone-McGuiness Flint
A rarity, and NTM, although it didn't make much of an impression on me.
10. Thank You (falettinme be mice elf agin)- Sly and the Family Stone
Somewhere between the sixth and eighth FF, depending on how strict one scores.
