another prediction: we won't revisit '96 until next year.  This was the latest a "new" year has ever been visited. Usually we go in Jan.  Wonder what the reason was?

maybe it wasn't dave's favorite year? it wasn't too much fun today. but i think it could be better...

Actually I thought it was not bad -- I knew 8 out of 10 songs, and that counts for something in a '90s set.  But Lenny's the only '90s black guy Dave knows, obviously. Well, besides the members of Portrait...

ha! well, kfog is the only place we'll hear "here we go again" these days. that's weird. i wonder how he feels about domino theory.

Portrait?  Never heard of 'em.  How about Living Colour?  (And where do they get off with the "u" in their name anyway?)

oh, yeah. there's living colour, too. i don't know about u, but i will never confuse the band name with the television show.

Bonus Track:  Johnny Cool, Brian Setzer.  Don't know that I've heard it before...

Davefish - Portrait's "Here We Go Again" is a major 1992 Katrina.

All - The other Dishwalla worth checking out is their version of "It's Gonna Take Some Time" from If I Were a Carpenter.

I would have given BOS to Gin Blossoms.  '96 would have benefited from some Poe ("Angry Johnny") as well.  Can't wait til '97, the last great year for modern pop-rock, hits the wheel.

Re: Living Colour - Didn't the band sue the show, or the show sue the band, or something like that?

King's X are still recording, but they haven't done anything I liked since "Over My Head" way back in '91 or thereabouts.

you & me both, bub!  I predict Dave will play Hanson's "MMMMBop" and Chumbawumba when we visit '97. And I'll hope for Cornershop, "Brimful of Asha".

i remember "mmmmbop." but, althought chumba and cornershop both ring a bell, i can't remember those songs. scary...of course, i stopped religiously listening to the radio sometime in '96. things are very vague after that.

UGH! Hideous. sappy. Travolta. Revolta.

By the way, I have to explain the word 'corny' to the kids.

I like "Phenomenon" too, even though it was tres corny!

Actually, this is one of those automated percussion instruments that always play at exactly the right time.  You've heard of it.  It's an autoclave.

Actually, that's what we used to cook the graphite guitar necks in; a large autoclave!

Was kind of sorry to miss today's set, if only because it was the first visit to 96, but I had a pet situation to deal with (thankfully the pooch seems to be recovering), so pretty much missed it all. Although looking at the setlist, the only song I really would have dug  was the one that sounded like it was from 1965: That Thing You Do.

Aside: when I saw Fountains of Wayne a couple months back, someone shouted out for That Thing You Do. Adam Schlesinger's response: "Uhh, security!! Over here..."
Let's get right to it.

Well, I suppose he's earned the right to be cutesy about it, but he's probably made more from that song than from the entire FOW catalog ("Stacey's Mom" included).

I'm sure you're right, so long as the authorship wasn't a "work for hire."  FWIW, peak chart position of "That Thing You Do" was #41 and "Stacey's Mom" was #21.

Pulled out my "best of '96" mix tape... here are few obvious omissions (maybe next time?):

Primitive Radio Gods, "Standing Outside a Phone booth etc"
Lyle Lovett, "Private Conversation"

Both of those were KFOG playlist biggies. We could've also heard

Butthole Surfers, "Pepper"
Nada Surf, "Popular"
Imperial Teen "You're One"
Lush, "Ladykillers"
Local H, "High-Fivin' Motherf----er"

all of which got major Live 105 play, along with multiple tracks by Oasis and No Doubt. For soul, Dave coulda thrown in the Fugees.

But at least he spared us "The Macarena".

and also:

Cardigans, "Lovefool"
Ben Folds Five, "Brick"
Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Impression That I Get"
Reel Big Fish, "Sell Out"
Green Day, "Time of Your Life" (that one's a lock, I'd wager)
Blur, "Song 2" (aka the "WOO HOO!" song)
Steve Earle, "Telephone Road"
Squirrel Nut Zippers, "Hell"
Big Blue Hearts, "Nobody Wants Her"
