Someone -- Eugene Pitt (an aging '50s soul singer, he sang with The Jive Five, so he must be pushing '70 at least) has cut a remake of "Sweet Soul Music", updating the names with those of rappers like Soulja Boy and Flo-Rida. Talk about a clash of cultures. Quite hilariously bad to my ears.

But what about that kiddie Devo thing that Mothersbaugh was behind a few years back? Little kids singing Devo songs, what was it called? -- Devo 2? Devo Jr? Li'l Devo? Gawd that was ridiculous.

That's good to know. Noon on Mondays is doable.

Riding in today my casual carpool driver was playing a cd of some cool rootsy blues rock that I'd never heard before.  Turns of it was Dan Aurebach's (The Black Keyes) solo album, Keep It Hid.  Very nice.

I'm quite enjoying it.  They were taking themselves too seriously on their last two albums, I think in hindsight.

Pete Doherty, despite being known as a tabloid trainwreck, is actually a gifted songwriter.  His latest, Grace/Wasteland, has quite a Ray Davies feel to it - Urth, I think you might enjoy.

And I am more enamored of the MGMT disc with every listen - and there have been many this week.

Ugh, ugh, ugh. I heard it on the radio the other day. I find it a waste of $$shambles.

Excellent call on that, Gaz--just gave the three songs there a quick listen, and rather enjoyed the lot. There are hints of Davies-esque songcraft (besides wearing its Britishness blatantly on its sleeve), but it's got his own spin on it as well. I will have to seek out that one. Thanks for the recco!
Let's get right to it.

Towards the end of his New Music Block, Big Rick played Beck's cover of "Leopardskin Pillbox Hat". Not bad; certainly works better than that rap "Forever Young" I mentioned in the songs-in-commercials thread.

That was used over the end credits of some movie I saw this year, can't remember which one.
