sounds like Fountains of Wayne listened a lot to the Cars.

In their live set they do an irony-laden montage of late 70s tunes in the middle of Radiation Vibe (their first hit). Cars and Joe Walsh are prominently featured. Styx, too, iirc.

heh, I enjoy all those bands without that convenient irony!

I enjoyed that more than anything else in this set.

hey Dave, I was at the Stanford/SJSU football game, and met someone who said they had seen you there.  Looked for you on the field after the game, unsuccessfully obviously.

She really did find some of the higher moments of '03. Next question: were there enough good songs from that year that she could do another set without repeating any of what we heard today?  (Hey Ya is yet to be called upon, so that's one.)

good question -- another "recent" set ('01? '02?) was also pretty front-loaded and made me wonder the same thing, re: next time.

Luce?  Rob Thomas?
Mr Thomas and his Matchbox compatriots. WOS1.

made-up fact:  he and Cher went to the same vocal coach.

Tink, I just stole your Rob/Cher line on FB. I'll pay any royalties

I'll bite:

“Hey Ya”, Outkast
“There There”, Radiohead
“Honestly”, Zwan
“Dirty Sticky Floor”, Dave Gahan
“Crazy Beat”, Blur
“The Boys Of Summer”, Ataris
“Are You Happy Now?”, Michelle Branch
“Like A Stone”, Audioslave
“Righteously”, Lucinda Williams
“Dyna-Mit_Ee”, Miss Dynamite

2003? Where's the novelty in that? I remember Dave's rule was it had to be at least 12 years ago. Eight years ago is like...now.

exactly. Actually Dave went back as recently as 9 years for a while. But I suspect we'll get 2004 and 2005 in the coming weeks.

We've been to '01, '02 and now '03, all since August 1, so it would seem if they're going to add those years to the wheel, we'll hear at least one more before the end of this month.
Let's get right to it.

heh, welcome to it.  My old-ass laptop at home won't let me post to FB, or else I would have dazzled the hoi-polloi with that nugget myself.

looking at Billboard's Top 100 of 2003, I'd say "Crazy in Love", Beyonce (with or w/out Jay-Z). OTOH, AL could decide to include Nickleback...
