KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 5/30/11

JJ scores with Billy Preston's sadly forgotten "I Wrote a Simple Song"

and more Gil Scott-Heron!  (tho' JJ keeps mispronouncing his name as Gil Scott HEROIN  ::) )

LAWD! Otis is just "Pitiful". Join the club, bub. Sweet Lou knows: Love is a hurtin' thang.  Bettye Swan's "Make Me Yours" is another lost gem.

yet another discovery, courtesy of Brian "the Cannon" Bannon": Atlantic Oldies 2NG, a British internet station based in... Washington DC?  Not unlike Offshore Music Radio (whose stream is no longer available to me at work, sadly).

currently on this interesting station: an hour of "Rare '60s". Some amazing stuff.

OMG -- Joe South's version of his "Birds of a Feather", a hit for latter-period Paul Revere/Raiders.

And now we're back in the '70s with Pilot's "January".

Obscurity of the Day: Gary Puckett's cover of "Keep the Customer Satisfied" -- haven't heard this in ages.

this request show on 1340 The Boardwalk rules: Jerry Butler, "What's the Use of Breaking up" followed by 8th Day's fab "She's Not Just Another Woman" and -- lawd! -- Jr Walker's "Do You See My Love For You Growing".

Now Rev. Green takes us to the river and washes us down.

OMG: Dusty S, "Just a Little Lovin' (Early in the Mornin')". Swoon!

NTM on 2NG: a lovely Robin Gibb ballad called "Saved By the Bell".  And it's followed by Blancmange's delightful "Living on the Ceiling" -- haven't heard this in ages! I'm up the bloody tree!

And lo & behold, 2NG has a Britsh retro-chart show, just like CG used to do! Tomorrow morning @ 9 Pacific, the UK chart from this week in 1980!

Holy crap! they're playing Dean Friedman's "Ariel"!  the loong "Jewish girl" LP version, no less. "I said 'Hi!', she said 'yeah, i guess I am!' "

oops, my bad: it's 1971 today! Even better! (1980's next week).

http://www.chartstats.com/chart.php?date=29%2F05%2F1971

Keith Michell (who played Henry VIII on TV) sings a Humperdinck-esque ballad to start.

Holy crap: Alan Price and Georgie Fame doing a duet??

Gen'l Johnson and the Chairmen -- ass yo' mama!

Mungo Jerry's "Lady Rose" is NTM. And rather forgettable. Ditto the Hollies' "Hey Willy".

Tami Lynn's "Gonna Run Away From You" is one of those Northern Soul classics that did nothing in the US.

I'm gobsmacked: Peter Noone covering Bowie's "Oh You Pretty Things"!! Homo superior indeed.

Wow: Perry Como's soundalike followup to "Impossible", "I Think Of you" -- didn't do much here but got to #14 in the UK. This show is on my must-listen list from now on.

Listening to Vin Scelsa's show from 5/21 -- wow, "End of the world" day seems like a year ago already.  Allen Ginsburg's "Father Death" -- now THAT'S a last-day-on-Earth song!

**********

Ending my day with some BlueRidgeCountry -- and it's a bluegrass cover of the Doobs' "Listen to the Music". Nice.
