"Dock of the Bay" is better as Tune #10.

I'm hoping for some minor Supremes.  Maybe "No Matter What Sign You Are."
Nobody wants to go on after Otis.

Arthur Conley would have happily gone right behind Otis.

What exactly does "surrey" mean, anyway?
surrey: "two-seated, four-wheeled pleasure carriage," 1895, from Surrey cart, an English pleasure cart (introduced in U.S. 1872), named for Surrey, England, where it was first made. The place name is O.E. su₫rige (722), lit. "Southerly District" (relative to Middlesex).

Maybe in the song they were riding in a carriage to a Stone Soul Picnic??

Say no more!

I imagine surrying as being kinda like sashaying or maybe swaggering.  Or...sauntering.  That's probably the best.  Grooving on down, doncha know?

The Rascals make me think of the Tea Party/libertarian conundrum currently facing our society: for some "being free" means NOT looking out for one's brothers.

I am to Arthur Conley jokes what Mike is to Donny Hathaway/Roberta Flack jokes.

I *thought* was a joke. But I didn't get it. I can now, if I try, of course.

They couldn't fit everyone in a surrey! And it's hardly the sort of vehicle you'd take to a stoned soul picnic...

ETA: Thanks for looking it up!
