Apparently the next Star Trek movie was in my area in May filming scenes at LLNL, the sequel to the 2009 film, Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Scotty, etc, were spotted on Main St Pleasanton, at the local multiplex cinemas, and (ha) at the Dublin Hooters:

What's the deal with patch.com, BTW? does it make money? I noticed a while back that Brad Kava, the onetime radio and music critic for the SJ Merc, was reduced to being the SJ writer for southbay.patch (or whatever it's called).  This was AFTER he'd been dumped as one of the Examiner "experts" on radio. Jeez.

This also means that I broke my wrist 46 year ago today as well -- I actually missed the highly anticipated debut because I was at the hospital having my wrist reset.

Classic Trek alert: tonite at 9 Me-TV is showing the Star Trek episode "Turnabout Intruder", the last episode of the series and the one in which Shatner-as-Kirk gets in touch with his feminine side by switching bodies with a woman. A space oddity indeed.

Saw Star Trek/Darkness and thought it was very very entertaining. I understand the criticism that it's no longer Gene Roddenberry's vision, but I think the worst you can say in that regard is that it's trying to have it both ways.  I can't get into the plot for fear of spoilers, but there's a nice speech at the end ol' Gene would've liked, I think.  And the casting (as it was last time) is dead-on. There are moments when Chris Pine is so... Shatner that it's scary. And Zachary Quinto is really kind of amazing. And yes, Mr Cumberbatch is a great villain.

I haven't seen the movie yet.  Here's a comment I saw in another forum.  Perhaps you'd care to
comment on it (without spoiling anything, of course.)

I saw the 2009 movie on Netflix.  It was better than this one.  Its
being pretty good is why I was willing to go to a theater to see the
new one.  (I saw Star Wars eps. 1 - 3 through a sense of generational
imperative.  They pretty much worked that out of my system.)  The
objection to the new one is that it is essentially a summer
blockbuster blow-em-up, with a bunch of winking at the Trekkies in the
audience.  As I say, it isn't exactly bad.  It is a more-than-
competent summer blockbuster blow-em-up.  Star Trek has always been
happy to blow stuff up, but that isn't really the point of Star Trek.

The best observation I have read is that in a better world, Joss
Whedon would have been given the Star Trek franchise and J.J. Abrams
the Avengers.
