Was tempted to put this in the Concert thread, but really it belongs here. A day-by-day guide to all the music that's happening around DC between tomorrow and Tuesday.
http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/day-by-day-the-obama-inauguration-music-1003931184.story?pn=3

I would particularly point out the Big Shoulders Ball on the 19th featuring Andrew Bird, Ted Leo, Tortoise, and Eleventh Dream Day, to name a few.

Also, both the SF Boys Chorus and SF Girls Chorus are singing at the Swearing-in Ceremony--but why not the Gay Men's Chorus? Wouldn't that have made for fun in the Green Room, hanging out with Rev. Rick and the fundies?

The SF Boy's chorus will grow up (by & large) to *be* the SFGMC in 20 years  ;)

Also worth noting that the big-ass Sunday thing (U2, Broooce, JCM etc) will be live on HBO -- even if you don't subscribe you'll be able to see it for free.

Anyone watch this? I tivo'd it, and am dismayed to report my DVR has picked this occasion to start malfunctioning--I've got periodic skips, pauses in the picture and jumps ahead in the sound. So I haven't exactly been able to see all of it.

One thing I was able to see (regretfully) was Josh Groban and a woman I don't recall singing My Country Tis of Thee. I noticed a large number of red ribbons on the lapels of the men's chorus backing them up. So perhaps some gay men's chorus (probably not SF's) was able to get on the program after all.
Let's get right to it.

see my multiple comments above. Overall, it was pretty wonderful. I'm guessing that chorus was either the Wash DC GMC or the one from Chicago. Virtually every city has one.

Agreed -- I saw a lot of it (missed the early bits) and it was very fine.  Pretty difficult not to appear inspiring on that stage...

we finally got our On Demand working.  It's not easy to navigate.  Is there some way to find it there?  I was away from the house during the event.

Broadway actress Heather Headley.

Try Premium Channels --> HBO --> Specials; it should be on the menu by now, tho' sometimes they wait a couple days if there are multiple re-airings of something (as there were yesterday with "We Are One"; it may be re-airing again today).

And in case you wondered about that gay bishop's invocation yesterday... HBO goofed and it wasn't broadcast. Ooops.

But if you're looking for uplift tonite, the KPOO Mon nite oldies show is doing 3 hours of "songs of change".  His theme shows tend to be very cool, so check it out.

plenty of news stories about the screwup.  It's on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWWAnitUCw4

and supposedly it will be included in future rebroadcasts, and also show at the inauguration tomorrow.

The concert is being shown on the web at http://www.hbo.com/weareone/webcast/index.html

I was able somehow to download it to a QuickTime file, which allowed me to watch in full-screen mode.

Just got back from watching -- arrived at the conference room in time for Rick Warren; I must say his invocation was very much in tune with the spirit of the day. Then came Ree-Ree with her Sunday-go-to-meetin' hat for "My Country 'Tis of thee".  And the classical piece (which I recognized as Copland, tho' John Williams was credited by C-SPAN) was quite, er, classy.

Obama's speech was, i think, terrific (and, true to his daughter's request, short -- just about 20 mins). As an atheist, I was especially impressed when he said "We are a nation of Christians and Muslims... Jews and Hindus and non-believers."  We don't usually get shout-outs from the presidential podium. Can ah get an "Amen"?

Hrm... every news outlet I've seen is calling that piece a John Williams composition called "Air and Simple Gifts" but it was clearly a rip-off of Copland's "Appalachian Spring" -- WTF?

I thought ABC credited it to Copland, and Williams did the orchestration.

AMEN!!! That was not lost on me either--more evidence that Obama will strive to include everyone, rather than the extreme exclusionary policies of the Bush administration.

Btw, Bush Street has been renamed Obama Street for today. (Probably not officially, however.) :D:D:D

If so, ABC is in the minority -- I keep coming across references to it as being Williams'.  My college radio station signed on every morning with 3 hours of classical music called "The Morning Concert", and "Appalachian Spring" was the opening theme music, so it's that rare classical piece that's burned into my brain.

I made note of the exact same thing - I watched the speech and pomp in Times Square with my friend/coworker Dan.  We thought it would be impossibly crowded, but apparently most New Yorkers were watching from their offices; it was a typical Times Square day and we were surrounded mostly by Euro tourists.

PS: LOL at Ree-Ree's hat.
