I just bought a Cashman & West single off iTunes yesterday ("California on My Mind," sometimes credited under the alternate nom de disque Morning Mist).

a great little tune! I think it became a jingle for hair coloring or something a few years later. C&W never really got their due; "American City Suite" (hope you get to hear the loooooong version someday) is just superb. They started their own label, Lifesong (which gave us Henry Gross's "Shannon"). And of course they produced all of Jim Croce's stuff. (and according to C&W, Croce's widow was the Bitch Queen of the Universe!)

they had some interesting "Sty in the City" program on today, apparently only on 1510AM.  It was an artist interview with Warren Haynes, where he talked, and spun some of his favorite tunes.  No biggie for most of you, but a nice little local touch.

Y'know what caught my eye most in that whole thing? The reruns of old Casey Kasem ATFs from the 70s. Too bad they are on at hours at which I would be highly unlikely to tune in, but if I'm ever up at 6am on a Saturday, or doing not much on at 10pm on a Saturday night, there ya go.

I'm listening this morning: Al Green shoots from 31 to 21 with "You Oughta Be With Me."  Always loved Casey's voice.

ETA: This is, I suppose, a 1972 set; the songs that followed were "Starting All Over Again," "If You Don't Know Me By Now," and "Thunder and Lightning."  What a set!

Well, I tuned in tonite at 10 and the idiots at KFRC began with hour #2, so I guess I've missed out on "American City Suite", Sam Neely (!) and Donny Osmond (both solo and with his brothers). But what a gas to hear Nilsson's "Space Man", Gallery doing "I Believe in Music" (a Mac Davis tune featuring some hilariously cheezy synths) and -- OMFG! -- Danny O'Keefe's "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues".

I dunno if they're rotating the years in order or skipping around, but if '73 is up next week, we'll hear such gems as Millie Jackson's "Hurts So Good", 3DN's little-played "Let Me Serenade You", Garfunkel's criminally forgotten "All I Know" and Marie Osmond's "Paper Roses"!

Billboard trivia: I just noticed that "Your Mama Don't Dance" is credited to 'Ken Loggins with Jim Messina' (!).

I wish I'd've caught "American City Suite" as well; I've been curious about that one.

Loving the new avatar, by the way.  Clearly there's no room for wife Jean in that little box.

So today's set was about 4 weeks before my birth.  I'd like to think I was absorbing a little bit of what was in the air.  (And hey, Helen Reddy gives me a word for the next scavenger hunt!)

Per Ben Fong-Torres in today's Chron:

Quote
On "Selvin On the City" tonight, Joel Selvin spins one-hit wonders, like "Black Betty" by Ram Jam, "Tired of Toeing the Line" by Rocky Burnette, and "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. The magic begins at 11 p.m. on "The Bone."

KGO's Bernie Ward indicted for kiddie porn; he's using the Pete Townsend "it was research" defense.  I didn't know he is a former Catholic priest.

I have a hard time believing the charges, unless it's some kind of technicality.  Bernie has railed against the practice of how the Catholic church has transferred priests into unsuspecting parishes, after they've been removed for pedophilia.  He's been one of the few liberal voices on the air (before the recent AAR etc) so maybe someone has it in for him.  Perhaps he was just stupid, and didn't get the permission he needed for research.

I hope you're right, but I am unclear on what kind of research needs to be done on the topic, particularly by laymen.

KPIG goes global (from Radio & Records)::

Quote
It is well known that the Americana-triple A hybrid programming that originates out of Mapleton Communications' KPIG/Monterey's main studios is also used by other sister stations in San Luis Obispo, San Francisco and Chico, Calif. But as the station prepares to celebrate its 20-year anniversary in 2008, its unique programming will become available to stations across the country thanks to a new syndication deal Mapleton Communications has recently inked with Dial Global Digital 24/7 Formats.

"We are thrilled at the opportunity to partner with Dial Global to expand the terrestrial reach of KPIG radio across the U.S. so listeners will be able to Tune In, Turn On, and Pig Out,” commented Mapleton Communications president and CEO Adam Nathanson to R&R.

"Here’s a format that radio listeners really get passionate about, done by some of its pioneers,” adds Dial Global Programming president Kirk Stirland. “KPIG has terrific awareness in the trade, and now, we’ll provide a way to take the KPIG experience to listeners everywhere."

The service will be a 24/7 feed that includes network time and room for local avails and becomes available on Dec. 31, 2007

I heard a promo for this last week: they asked listeners (Fox-heads?) to vote for their fave LPs and they're playing the vinyl versions of the top vote-getters, I think.

Vinyl timeline is kicking ass in 1976. Great albums that year. Lots of Seger.

Fox-heads, no no no. First time I've ever seen or thought of that monniker.

Joe Walsh just entered Hotel California.
This was a huge album for me in 76.
Frampton too.

Well, local for Gaz, anyway: NYC's WQCD has dropped Smooth Jazz (after 20 years) and switched to "The NY Rock Experience", a triple-A type format, so NY finally has a KFOG-ish station. (tho' The Peak is already doing that on the outskirts of the city).
