I think the Gnarls Barkley is kind of anomalous.  (The song's now up to #2 on the national pop charts, btw, to my utter shock.)

And YES about the KT Tunstall.  Because of my hearing it a couple times on KFOG, I had "Black Horse" in my Top 10 singles of last year, and here we are in July and she's just completing her Top 40 run with it.  Hard to blame the programmers for cowardice -- if I were in such a shrinking market, I'd be afraid of losing my job by taking a chance -- but it does suck for us all.

I'm the first to complain about cowardly programmers, but the issue with Tunstall was no US record deal, and you do not want to piss off every label in America by taking away one of their slots and inserting a song that folks can't buy at Wal-Mart. (Never mind that it would serve them right for cramming crap like Hoobastank down America's collective throat.)

Playlists for Alice (KLLC) and Krush (KRSH) are available on Yes.com.  KRSH links to them directly.

They go back 24 hours, and the data seems pretty "clean" (unlike KFOG's, which can be inconsistent and thereby hard to analyze.)

I rolled some scripts to save them for longer than that.  :-}

Unfortunately, they appear to not be able to get data from the stations between 9PM-12AM.  Odd.

At any rate, I've got a couple days' worth of data.  More to come.  Let me know if you have any questions about KLLC or KRSH playlists.

Yes.com offers top 10 and top 100 songs played.  I don't know over what period of time they make this determination, but it's interesting to look at.

Last nite as I was tuning back over to KPIG after listening to JJ's '70s Soul Jamz, I stumbled across a station at the top of the AM dial -- 1600 KUBA, they're up in Yuba/Sutter and they're an oldies station. They were playing ONJ's "Please Mister Please", which I hadn't heard in ages and which I didn't think any oldies stations dared to play any more. Impressive, and a total flashback, even as the signal faded in & out.

Sadly, they don't stream.

AM radio on warm summer evenings--it's amazing what you can pull in sometimes. I've occasionally gotten stations from the midwest, and a few years back when driving up the valley on an August night we listened to most of an single-A game between Salem-Keizer (the Giants A-ball affiliate) and a club from Everett WA--on the Everett team's station. Wish I could remember the names of some of the players--some of 'em are probably on the Giants by now.
Let's get right to it.

well, not local, but a popular New Jersey rock station, WDHA (an old college radio chum of mine works there) had to do an on-air apology to the Who after airing this promo:

Roger: (banging on door) Peter...what are you doing in there? We've got to go, man.
Pete: One minute, Roger. I'm just lookin' up some things on the computer.
Roger: (banging and yelling) What are you looking up in there, Peter?
We've got to go on tour, man.
Pete: I'm just doing some research. Oh...that picture's reaaal nice...
Roger: (more banging on door) Stop messin' around in there, Peter. I'm
comin' in now...
Pete: (frantic) No! No! No! No! (sound of belt buckle in background)
Just...Just give me one second.
Roger: (sound of door opening and Roger says in shocked/disgusted voice)
Oh, bloody hell, Peter. Put your pants on. We're going to Jersey.

WDHA announcer: That's right. The Who are coming to Jersey. "DHA"
welcomes the Who to the PNC Bank Arts Center Thursday, September 21st and we've got your tickets all weekend long. ("Bargain" is played ..."I call that a Bargain...the best I ever had..") Tickets go on sale Monday at noon but you can win 'em before you can buy 'em all this weekend right here at the rock of New Jersey 105.5 WDHA.

(End of commercial)

well, not so local, but if you have XM, their "decades" channels are playing (in chron order) EVERY CHARTED SINGLE from the decade. Here's a list of the '70s selections:

Damn. That does the "World Class Rock A to Z" schtick one better, dunnit?

How many songs you suppose are on that list? The PDF is something like 46 pages long. At roughly 50 or so songs per page, we're talking probably 2,300, minimum.
Let's get right to it.

WOXY is shutting down

Not-so-local radio news. Internet-only station WOXY out of Cincinnati is throwing in the towel, they just can't make it on subscriptions and ad revenue. Last day is 9/15. But it kind of sounds like they're going out with a bang rather than a whimper.

SAN FRANCISCO IS ‘MOVIN’ TO A NEW RADIO STATION

KFRC 99.7FM FLIPS TO “MOViN99.7” BEGINNING TODAY, SEPT. 22

San Francisco, September 22, 2006 – CBS RADIO station KFRC, 99.7FM flipped its format today at 10:00AM, PT introducing The New MOViN 99.7.  The format, which targets women 25-44, is a new version of rhythmic AC focusing on a blend of adult hits from the 80s, 90s and today.  Core artists of the station include familiar names like Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Prince, Outkast, Black-Eyed Peas and Beyonce.

Doug Harvill, Senior Vice President and Market Manager for CBS RADIO’s San Francisco stations remarks, "The MOViN format has exploded in popularity in markets such as Los Angeles and St. Louis, and has become an instant favorite in Seattle achieving top-rated status among women 18-44 in only six weeks on the air.  There is great demand among the Bay Area's diverse population for the MOViN blend of music and we look forward to making the most of this rare opportunity to launch an entirely new and different musical presentation."

Mike Preston, Vice President of Programming for KCBS and KFRC in San Francisco, will serve as Program Director of The New MOViN99.7 overseeing the launch and development of the station.  He brings more than 20 years of radio programming experience and has been acknowledged as a leader in creating new radio formats and managing established radio station brands.

Custom television spots are set to help launch the station highlighting the MOViN99.7 “Makes you Feel Good” branding.

MOViN 99.7 (KFRC) is owned and operated by CBS RADIO, one of the largest major-market radio operators in the United States.  A division of CBS Corporation, CBS RADIO operates 179 radio stations, the majority of which are in the nation’s top 50 markets.  CBS RADIO also owns and operates FREE-FM 106.9 (KIFR), KCBS-AM, ALICE @ 97.3 (kllc), KITS (Live 105), and KYCY-AM (KYOURADIO) in San Francisco.

I don't think that is in the feel good range for me. I am not a rhythmic contemporary adult! I refuse.

BTW the last song played on KFRC before the format change was "American Pie". The day the music died, indeed.

Today a girlfriend (47) was commenting about the format switch and saying how horrible the new stuff was and found MAX FM which seems to work for her. She said Cami and Dean have a myspace page and apparently reported not getting pink slips till after their show on Friday. They didn't know what was happening.
