LOL! yeah, they took over the AM only, and in exchange Infinity got Family Radio's 106.9 FM, which will eventually have a new format.

Well, maybe they should make it an "All Satan, All the Time" format to balance out the new KFRC-AM.

About 15 years ago I was in New Orleans and a station played all Zep, all the time. I had a rented car and it was so cool knowing I could hear all Zep. Guess it gets old after some period of time.

the new station in town, MAX 95.7 (aka the SF version of "Jack") is looking for announcers:

the SF version of Jack -- that'd be Sourdough Jack, wouldn't it?

So I decided to give 95.7 MAX another shot this afternoon and --- wow.

in the last 20-min sweep, they played

Sweet, "Fox on the Run"
Rupert Holmes, "Escape"
the Go-Go's "Head Over Heels"

Not bad -- and I don't think I've heard any of those on over-the-air radio (outside of 10@10) in ages.

OMG! They're playing the only Steve Perry song I've ever loved -- "Foolish Heart".

CNN is finally on board in noticing the "Jack" and "Bob" formats:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/05/25/radio.shuffle.ap/index.html

I want to believe that there's room for a new crop of tastemaking DJs to guide people through such eclecticism, but the evidence points to people wanting just the music without the talk.  *sigh*

Listened to the Austin version of Bob when I was in Texas 2 weeks ago, and the mixes were okay, but the self-promotion was a wee bit over the top ("Even we don't know what Bob 's gonna play next").

Most incongruous segue yet on 95.7 MAX:

from MTB "Heard it in a Love Song" to A-Ha, "Take on Me".

I was in the car last nite and MAX played Rocky Burnette, "Tired of Toein' the Line". I actually stayed in the car in the Cala parking lot until it was over. My head was bobbing up and down and people were giving me funny looks.  What a great f***in' single.
