Dave breaks an admirable deep-cut streak with "Come Dancing".

Then jumps back into it with Allentown. Isn't BJ playing around here this week?

a couple years back, when he was in the area on his tour with EJ, I saw him coming out of the import motorcycle showroom at Valencia and 15th.  Damn, he's short -- 5'4" is being generous.

Yep, as far as the Shraytabase is concerned. Same for Allentown, adding to an already considerable list of Joel tunes (20) that have appeared.
Let's get right to it.

"Sexy & 17" is def the "forgotten" Stray Cats song, their last substantial hit before they more-or-less disappeared. I was remiss in not BOS'ing it for rarity. Sure beats hearing "Rock This Town" for the umpteenth.

But I'd swear Dave has played "Allentown" within the past couple of years.

Well, I guess it's more than likely it's been played sometime in the course of 10@10, but it didn't make the database.

However, the sheer number of different Billy Joel songs has me wondering: what artist has the largest number of different songs in the DB?

It would have to be someone with a pretty lengthy career and a large catalog. Stones? Who?  Or a perennial Davefave like Todd Rundgren?
Let's get right to it.

Good question.  ELO?  I'd be surprised if it was Todd -- Dave fave he may be, but more "usual suspects" of his turn up (and win BOS) than rarities. Stones is a better guess.

I got out Whitburn to see his ranking of top artists (using a point system based on charted singles). The Top Ten:

1 Elvis
2 Beatles
3 Stevie Wonder
4 Elton John
5 James Brown
6 Stones
7 Pat Boone
8 Aretha
9 Marvin Gaye
10 Michael Jackson

Guess we can rule out Pat Boone   But of the others -- Stevie, EJ, Stones, ReeRee and Marvin are all possibilities.

So did a little counting, and we missed the obvious choice, by a factor of two: the Beatles with more than 90 different songs. I NEVER would have guess that many. Stones are second with 46. Here's the top 10:

Code: [Select]
Beatles 90
Rolling Stones 46
U2 41
Steely Dan 39
Bruce Springsteen 37
REM 34
Police 31
Fleetwood Mac 31
Genesis 31
David Bowie 29
Let's get right to it.

Some fine detective work, Chief.  I would have thought Joni would be up there, if only because Dave's covered every track off Court & Spark over the years -- then again, his love of that album's seemingly dissipated over the years and may predate the Shraytabase altogether.

39 Steely Dan songs, though.  That's kinda remarkable.  As is the Police's count, accumulated over, what, a six-year career?  31 songs must constitute about half their catalog.

The Beatles total is remarkable, since they're only "legal" in 4 years ('67-'70) that Dave visits regularly -- even if ya factor in the occasional all-Beatles or Lennon tribute sets.

As to Joni -- yeah, "C&S" is a Dave fave, but he pretty much ignores Blue, For the Roses and anything other than "In France they Kiss..." and "Coyote" from '75 on.

I was pretty blown away by the Beatles total as well. The fact that Dave does an all-Beatles set about once a year bumps the total up a bit, but that's still a pretty amazing number. Been trying to find a number for how many songs they released during the lifespan of the band, so far the best I've been able to come up with is "over 200" so 90 is a huge percentage in any case.

I think Joni had about 25, but not quite enough to crack the top 10.
Let's get right to it.

90 different songs. Btw, both halves of Sgt. Pepper are in the DB, so that counts as two.

Oh, and the Beatles total should be bumped to 92, as I found two of their songs credited to George Harrison in the DB (Because (a capella) and It's Only A Northern Song) from the memorial set Dave did after George died.
Let's get right to it.

OMFG!  BOS5 and proxy of Gaz, "Allentown".

A far better history lesson than "We Didn't Start the Fire" could ever hope to be.  Major, major sledgehammer for me, and I won't even bitch about the line "so the graduations hang on the wall" (guess "diplomas" didn't scan well in the meter).

I'm sure I've mentioned that I lived in Massapequa NY, out on Lon Gisland, next to Amityville, as a child (age 7-10). Have I ever mentioneed that if we'd stayed there my parents have assured me that I would have gone to Massapequa H.S., not the nearby Lutheran H.S.?  Which would have meant that in my freshman year the following people would have been in school with me: Brian Setzer, Sr.; Daniel Baldwin, Jr.; Lee Rocker, Jr. ;Slim Jim Phantom, So.; William Baldwin (who's currently married to Chynna Pillips) would have been in 8th grade, between me & my brother Joel in 7th.  Stephen Baldwin would have been in 6th grade with my brother Chris.  Presumably Alec, (Alexander Rae Baldwin III) would have been around since his dad was both a Social Studies teacher and the football coach.
