9 July 2007--it's a 1977-86 VT
« on: July 09, 2007, 10:03:32 AM »
Leading off with Mah-vin, Got to Give It Up.

Wasn't this in the last VT we had, which I'm thinking ended with '77? (Could be mistaken on that last.)
Let's get right to it.

OK, the last VT spanned 74 to 83, BUT! Marvin's GTGIU was the '77 representative in that set as well.

05/15/2007 - Tuesday! Today is a "Vertical Tasting" on 10@10!!!

1. 1974 - Ray Stevens - The Streak
2. 1975 - EWF - Shining Star
3. 1976 - Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around and Fell in Love (BEST OF SET!!)
4. 1977 - Marvin Gaye - Got to Give it Up
5. 1978 - Jeffferson Starship - Count on Me
6. 1979 - Jacksons - Shake Your Body
7. 1980 - Blondie - Call Me
8. 1981 - Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes
9. 1982 - J. Geils Band - Freeze Frame
10. 1983 - Men at Work - Overkill
Let's get right to it.

Dave's changed his "time ... marches on!" soundbite.

And BOS to "Baker Street," split between Messrs. Rafferty and Ravenscroft.

Ah...the inevitable Rafael Ravensroft shout out.  BOS from me too.

Gaz, check out my attempt at translating Nena back on the KBCO page.

Btw, heard a brief interview with Dave Grohl from the London Live Earth show on Saturday, in which it was mentioned they're releasing a cover of the aforementioned Baker Street. Harrumph.

I only need "Chuck E. Cheese in Love" once a year.  Same with "Funkytown," the latter having been felled by irony overkill.

They covered "Baker Street" many years ago, actually; I remember hearing it when I was interviewing for the job with RadioSpy (then MP3Spy) in SoCal in '99.

Dave should do an '80s VT that includes both versions of Funkytown -- haven't heard the Pseudo Echo cover in ages.

"Don't You Want Me," ruined by a cookie commercial.

VHM Human League, for reminding me how fresh this sounded at the time; even the "urban" stations in NY were playing it.

Ah, a little research reveals that they released an expanded version of their album The Color and The Shape this year, which included BS. That's probably what they were referring to in the interview I heard. But it appears that yes, it was recorded years ago.

And I noted that among the others who have done covers of that song, one is Rick Springfield. Who'd a thunk?
