First time I heard it, I thought this sounded like some of Sam Phillips' (T-Bone Burnett's wife, not the Sun Records honcho)  early 90s material.

It's a Gray-Haired Ponytail 2-1/2 hours as KQED runs another Pledge Month Wonder, "The 60s Rock Experience".  Gaz! it's a re-formed Association doing "Along Comes Mary"! And the Grass Roots. And Eric Burdon (riding the servants, er, Serpent again). And Scott MacKenzie (with the longest gray-haired ponytail of all).

Unlike last week's fab Soul special, with its full orchestra, some of the artists (the Association in particular, at least so far) appear to be "supplemented" by the original recordings of their hits.  Looks like I missed 3DN's Chuck Negron...

I was just reading up on the Association the other day.  Apparently, the drummer, Ted Bluechtel (whom a friend's friend claims to have hooked up with) was the last remaining original member of the band by the end of the '70s, and so retained ownership rights to the band name ... which he thereupon leased out to anyone paying cash on the barrel, resulting in a number of bands touring as "the Association" with no legitimate claim to the band's name or legacy.  I wonder if it was one of these bands that played this fest.

These guys were old; they were the original group (which seemed to be the whole point of the show). John Kay of Steppenwolf was quite the hot daddy, IMHO.  Nice vintage B&W clip of the Moodies doing "Nights in White Satin" that I'd never seen before, too.

More Geezer Rock: tonite's Joel Selvin show was a collection of Who rarities and oddities. Among the goodies: Motown covers ("Heat Wave" and "Baby Don't You Do It", the latter the B-side of "Join Together" I think Joel said); Stones covers ("Under My Thumb", which they recorded to help the Stones with legal (drug bust) problems in the '60s; Pete's demo of "Bargain"; "Water", the B-side of "5:15"; and the obligatory Coke commercials. But the Keith Moon "Great Shakes" spot that Bob Stroud is so fond of did not make an appearance.

Stayed up last night like a twenty-something with a head full of blotter (without the benefit
of either, alas) and listened to the entire KFOG broadcast of the Grateful Dead show in Santa
Clara.  Trey isn't Jerry, but he's done his homework and fit in well with the band.  Dead shows
are notoriously uneven, but I thought everybody played quite well.  It's clear that they put a
lot of effort into preparing for this to ensure they would end on a high note, as it were.  (There
was one big screw-up during The Eleven, when they apparently started singing the wrong verse,
then sputtered out after a few words.)  A little research shows the boys have been pulling out
much of this old material in recent years, but I think one or two of these numbers haven't
appeared in decades.  I think I got the set list correct.  I'm not working tomorrow, so I'm going
listen again tonight.  I fully expect Dark Star, and probably another rare track or two from an
early album.  It was epic, man!

ETA:  Even with KFOG editing out the set break, the show ran for over three and a half hours.
It didn't air until 1:00 am.  Tonight's concert starts an hour earlier, and the broadcast may well
begin before midnight.

For me, the Sunday show was the Grateful Dead, Saturday was like Phil and Friends.  It reminded me of many of our 10@10 discussions, and the struggle between whether a song is worth hearing based on either its quality or LN quotient.  Saturday was a real treat for the crowd who favors rarities.  Lots of stuff that hasn't been played in ages, and nothing newer than Truckin'.  Lots of relentless jamming, etc.  I'm old enough to appreciate all the rarities, but it wasn't really what I wanted.  Saturday opened promisingly, and I was near tears during Uncle John's Band.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show, but most of it was "gee, look at us playing this rare song!" stuff.   It was also a yin-yang experience for me, setting-wise.  On Saturday, some friends invited us at the last minute to go via the bosses luxury suite, which apparently none of the bosses wanted to attend.  A totally unreal experience of how the ruling class lives.  On Sunday, we were behind the stage way the hell up in section 418.  On Sunday, Brown-eyed Women, Loser, Row Jimmy, and Black Peter were all in the first set, and all was forgiven!  Yes, there was a lot of sloppy playing, but the beast that is the Grateful Dead came out to play with us.
