VHM to Mr. Zevon. Dave has several songs he plays off this record, but I'd love to hear Tenderness on the Block just once.
Just look at the track list for Excitable Boy:
Johnny Strikes Up The Band
Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner
Excitable Boy
Werewolves Of London
Accidentally Like A Martyr
Nighttime In The Switching Yard
Veracruz
Tenderness On The Block
Lawyers, Guns And Money
What a solid effort, eh?
Exactly--and we've heard at least five of those in various sets over the years: Johnny, Roland, Excitable Boy, Werewolves, and Lawyers. And maybe Nighttime in the Switching Yard too--can't recall. All of those got FM airplay when this came out.
I remember seeing Zevon play as the second band (Les Dudek opened, if anyone remembers him) at one of those Mountain Aire festivals up in the sierras that summer--great band--Warren on keys, Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Stanley Sheldon (see Frampton Comes Too Fast) on bass, can't recall who the drummer was. All of them looked incredibly hung over--they went on around noon and it was about 90 degrees out. I can still smell the essence of Hawaiian Tropic in the air from that day...
