alternate lyrics rejected by Donovan before he finally settled on "goo goo barabajagl":

"Koo koo ka choo, Mr Barabajagl"

But belated VHM to the late Johnny Bristol for his "duet" vocal.  Why did it take people 30 years to finally figure out/admit that it was his uncredited voice? I mean, he produced and co-wrote it, and it's not like nobody knew what he sounded like. As recently as the late '80s, when Nelson George wrote his excellent Motown book Where Did Our Love Go?, the identity of the singer was still a speculative "mystery" -- some people swore it was Berry Gordy. WTF?

From the Billboard Book of Number One Hits, here's Bristol:

"That was Berry Gordy's decision.  Diana was getting a little tired in the studio, and he and I could see we weren't getting the feeling from her that we wanted.  I suggested if I went in the other booth and sang with her, just sort of gave her a little inspiration, that it might spark a little more feeling.  Gordy liked what I did so much, he said he was going to keep it on."
