there I was, watching Boondocks, and near the end, they're playing a song I feel like I recognize, and it's some version of the Airplane's "Today."

pretty weird, eh?

Yep, it works now. Tried posting from a logged-out state, and it took me to the login screen rather than post a reply. Well done Geoff--thanks! Hopefully this will keep us spam-free from here on.
Let's get right to it.

It was a cover?  Hrm.  If you find out more, please let me know!

Thanks,

Gilmore Girls

my daughter is addicted to this show, and watches her DVD collection a lot.  Last night, the Korean girl is talking on the phone about progressive rock and says words to the effect of "I can draw a straight line from Yes to Jethro Tull to the Jam..."

I was aghast at the chronological error, putting Yes before Tull!

This is from a show that prides itself on cultural references, and prints a booklet of references that comes with the DVD set!

I'm watching a great show on one of the many "Starz" channels I have ("Starz in Black" I think) called "Blues Divas" -- Ann Peebles, Denise LaSalle, Bettye Lavette, Irma Thomas, Mavis Staples... Hoo Lawd!  And in between songs (all recent performances) they're interviewed by Morgan Freeman.

If you're near a TV with digital cable, GAC (Great American Country) is, as I write this, showing their weekly "Grand Old Opry Live", tonite featuring Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello and Gillian Welch.

Another weekend, another PBS fundraiser that revolves around baby-boomer music.  This time it's an all-star salute to the 4 Tops. Paul Rodgers (minus Queen) just regaled us with one of my fave Tops non-hits, "Love Music", and "Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever" (Susan Tedeschi has nothing to worry about).  Oddest intro of the night: Host Nick Ashford introduced Rodgers by saying "Paul Rodgers and Free helped lead the British Invasion" WTF?

But all is forgiven -- here's Ree-Ree. Damn, her boobs are bigger than Dolly and Latifah put together!

Oh-oh, I was wondering where Levi was -- and here he is in a wheelchair, unable to sing. This is too too sad.

Saturday night we were channel surfing about 11 and ran into a T Rex concert film called Born to Boogie on KTEH. Interesting if only to see what Marc Bolan was like as a live performer. Fairly energetic, obviously high on something, but still pretty damn talented. And the way the crowd was screaming you'd have thought it was the Beatles circa 64. Also some interesting crowd shots of overly made-up, glammed out Brit teens.
Let's get right to it.

Anyone here familiar with the current phenomenon of High School Musical, a Disney Channel movie whose soundtrack is the #1 album in America?

Meant to mention this last nite: during the A's/Yankees game, one of the musical beds they used leading into a commercial was the intro to King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man".

Don't know if anyone else is still watching Idol, but last night the remaining 8 contestants had to do Queen songs, and got to work them out with Taylor & May (& Rodgers presumably, they mentioned him but didn't give him any screen time).  Apparently John Deacon, who was nowhere to be seen & wasn't mentioned, isn't touring with them, which I didn't realize.

Note to Gaz, among the notables who got a split second shot of themselves sitting in the audience: Mickey Dolenz.
