I always kinda dug Mason's version.  Even though it's not in my top 2 (Jimi, the original), but I think it edges out U2's version (pun intended).

At least Dave Mason played on the 'original' version by Hendrix.

I was just digging around in IMDb to research that fact.  Can't find any reference to an earlier joke, and it's nearly impossible to believe Landis, Ramis, et al, never saw this before writing Animal House.

WOS James & Carly, "Mockingbird", which I really disliked at the time.

VHM Eagles, "Already Gone", which Asylum thought would be huge.  But they had to wait another 6 months for the song that would really break them wide open, "Best Of My Love".
