The Sugarcubes are getting "most unnecessary," only because they've been spinning the hell out of them on 92.3 these past two weeks.

and speaking of "caterwauling" as we were on Friday...

Bjork Sjucks.

sadly, despite many requests for pop & soul, the closest we got to the Top 40 was Erasure and Percy.

BOS #4 Treat Her Right.  Haven't heard this in ages.  Great harmonica.

and one for the self-referential songs list:

I tell her that I play for "Treat Her Right"
She asks me if I'm gonna play tonight - Yeah!

Wouldn't "The Flame" violate 10@10's implicit "No Diane Warren Ever" rule?

Sadly, that ship has sailed: "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "If I Could Turn Back Time" have both made appearances. And I'd give dispensation for "Rhythm of the Night" by DeBarge

ETA: per Wiki, Warren didn't write "The Flame", tho' it's crappy enuf to have been one of hers.

Just checked AMG to see who *did* write it (Nick Graham and Robert Mitchell), and learned that while Diane Warren did not write this song, she did co-write another song that appears on the same album: Ghost Town, with Rick Nielsen.

I once saw Cheap Trick at a show and they took some time to introduce The Flame by saying it was their record company's idea to record it.  The band hated the song, but they weren't selling records like they used to, so they took their label's very persuasive "advice."   (i.e.: "record this sure-fire hit or we dump you," probably was how it went).   Most Cheap Trick fans don't think highly of it, but it was good for their sales.

It's sappy and bombastic, with ringing echo-ey acoustic guitars, and cheesy lyrics, but Robin Zander is on lead vocals, and he can make anything sound good.   When they played it at the show (it was at the Napa-Sonoma Fairgrounds in 2005, I think) those who had lighters held them up, natch.

I knew if I served up that straight line somebody would at least take a lunging swing at it!

Actually this was one of top 2 or 3 experiences I had as a chauffer.  I drove headliners New Order for the day, but got to hang with PiL's bassist & manager (Ted Gardner, who co-owns the rights to Lollapalooza), chat with Johnny Lydon/Rotten, and invite various members of The Sugarcubes to check out the interior of my limo, as they (& PiL) had come there by van.  Bjork was as intensely shy as you might ever have imagined.  Those who have long memories will recall various anecdotes from that experience that I've written up over the years.
