LNG/KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 3/14/11

Judge does his Monday disco thang -- Melba Moore's "Pick Me Up, I'll Dance" is a forgotten NYC club nugget.  And it's followed by the even-more-obscure Deniece Williams disco foray, "I've Got The Next Dance".  Ya won't hear these on Kiss-FM.

Larry Grogan's show never fails to astound, and besides the always-wonderful orig Felice Taylor version of ""It may Be Winter Outside...", he plays a NTM Mary Wells cover of the Beatles "I Should've Known Better" that is just delightful.

and lawd have mercy -- Wayne Cochran, "Goin Back to Miami" followed by Larry Birdsong (who?) with "You better dig your own potatoes -- keep that other man outta yo' patch".  :o

And Sweet Lou sez it's a new day, babies!

Easy 93 for a while this morning. Gerry Marsden's ode to a gay Liverpudlian: "Fairy, Cross the Mersey"

and speaking of boats: Yacht Rock at its finest, with Ambrosia in their El Lay slickster period; and the Commodores, sailin' on.

JJ plays the fab First Choice: smarty pants/for romance/just one glance -- now THAT'S songwriting!

Not often I hear Melba Moore twice in one week but here she is with "This Is It", a fine shouldabeen that shamefully peaked at #91 (!) in '76.

Bypassing Casey today to listen to Peter Young's delightful JazzFM podcast, and lo, he plays Cymande's "The Message" -- the 2nd time this week and the 3rd this month that I've heard this forgotten track.  TANC3!!

Mr Young commented "from 1973 but sounding remarkably fresh -- hasn't dated one bit".

Bypassing Casey today to listen to Peter Young's delightful JazzFM podcast...

Young's final hour (it's a 3-hour show) is dedicated each week to vintage soul, and today's theme is "Soul Gobbledygook" -- songs with nonsense lyrics.  "Shoorah-Shoorah", "Sha-la-Boom-Boom", "Pata Pata", "Oogum Boogum" etc.  Just delightful.
