RIP Jim Marshall, rock photographer, 74
« on: March 24, 2010, 05:44:52 PM »
Famed rock & jazz photographer Jim Marshall found dead in NYC hotel room while on tour to promote his new book.  Among his credits, his photos grace some 500 LPs.  He's quite a character, almost like a Hunter S. Thompson.  I shared a drink with him at the SF Hard Rock Cafe in 1991 at the dedication of framed 'Beatles at Candlestick 1966' concert tickets for the Hard Rock's wall.  I was able to get him to sign a poster of his photos of the Beatles arrival at SFO and at that concert.  Chron article w/photo gallery:

definitely a Hunter S type of guy.  He came around the shop a lot in the late 80's, he was hustling the new owners of Stars Guitars to buy some of his $500 prints.  I wish I had bought some.  His one of the 5 bands in the panhandle is awesome.  He said it took a lot of weed to get them all to be there at the same time!

Don't stand in the way of LOVE!

Was it one of you guys who showed me a book of Marshall's photography late last year?  I was enamored, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I was when I was paging through it.

Speaking of rock photography, click around in here.  Pick a category, then "view thumbnails"

I took the famous pic of Grace Slick and Janis Joplin from Marshall's website and made it my computer wallpaper earlier this week. A thirtysomething cow orker wanted to know who "those two '80s-looking chicks" were. *sigh*
