6 March 2008--it's...Mshray's 45th
« on: March 04, 2008, 11:01:10 AM »
I asked Dave for a Strictly Instrumental set, we'll see what happens.  I had rung him up about 4 weeks ago after he'd played what I thought to be a 70's TV theme as a traffic bed.  Turned out to be "K-Jee" by M.F.S.B. off the SNF soundtrack.  We chatted a bit, and when I suggested that it had been a while since a SI set he said I should email him.  So I did & requested Stanley Clarke's "School Days".  We'll see what happens.

Today (Tuesday) I phoned Ginger (since she'd mentioned us this morning), and asked her if she already knew what year she'd be playing on Thursday, and she said 1975 & that I could certainly email her a suggestion or two.

Any thoughts for that, y'all?  I immediately thought of "Miracles" but she said that unfortunately KBCO just doesn't do Starship.  Who knew?  Good thing I hadn't gotten my hopes up for "Fast Buck Freddie" in any case. Another thought that might not be approved is "White Punks On Dope".  Anyway, I haven't come up with any really killer ideas yet, maybe a deep cut off of Blood On The Tracks like "Buckets Of Rain", or similarly "Everyone's Gone To The Movies" off of Katy Lied.

Aw, nothing with a "45" theme?

Apres le link, le deluge:

I gave some thought to a "45" themed request, but Davemack had already said something about it, and it didn't seem like the kind of thing Mr. Morey would do twice in under a year.  So I'll let him try to make that happen.

As soon as I posted this I went to that exact list, and was reminded what a great year 1975 was for Southern Rock, so I' kind of angling for that with Ginger.

Also some great cheese in '75, not least with both Bobby Vinton's "Beer Barrel Polka" and Al Martino's "Volare" making comebacks and coincidentally both peaking at #33.

"KBCO just doesn't do Starship"  -- wow, that's weird, considering how many transplanted hippies there are in Boulder!  Most of what I'd want from '75 would be disco or pop, none of which would fly with 'BCO. I'll say Wings, "Magneto & Titanium Man" or anything suitable from that LP.

Don't be surprised if Dave does yer "SI" set on Friday. I've been keeping a list of never-heard-on-10@10 instrumentals for just such an occasion:

Herbie Hancock, Rockit
Mike Post, Hill Street Blues
Harold Faltermeyer, Axel F.
Focus, Sylvia
Love Unltd Orch, Satin Soul
Trammps, Trammps Disco theme
Billy Joel, Root Beer Rag
They Might Be Giants, Dog on Fire (aka "Theme from The Daily Show", and written by Bob Mould!)
You spin me right 'round, baby, right 'round

Lots o' good possibilites for '75:

Springsteen-Backstreets or some other deep cut off BTR
Tubes - Mondo Bondage (although if WPOD is going to get 86'd...)
Joan Baez-Diamonds & Rust
Pete Wingfield-18 With a Bullet (Don't know if Ginger's ever played this--if she has it)

For the SI set, I'd dig:

The Meters: Just about anything, but Look-ka-py-py would top the list (and they're not in the DB at all)
Booker T & the MG's: Melting Pot or Hip Hug Her (also bustouts, both)
Chicago-Mongonucleosis (not a bustout, but rarely played and a great tune)
Apollo 100-Joy
Jeff Beck-Goodbye, Pork Pie Hat

More later, time to go home.
