I can only imagine this was a record-company idea -- would there have been anyone at the network young/hip enuf to be pushing for it?

I think Bowie was still on RCA (kind of an odd choice, but whatever). No clue what label Bing recorded for, but RCA would not be too big a stretch (unlike, say, Stiff or something).
