A late '67 release -- I believe it was a local hit in Detroit before breaking out nationally. Ah, the days of regional record sales.

Yep, when I was in college, circa 1980. I was heavily altered at the time.
Let's get right to it.

didn't realize that was a Barbet Schroeder film.  We watched Angel Heart on DVD last night, and in the special features was a recent interview with Mickey Rourke talking about his career.  When he got to Barfly (which I loved) he said Schroeder was 'a prick' & 'a self-centered asshole'. He loved working with Michael Cimino though.

That's like saying "Springsteen is an idiot, but I really dig Bryan Adams."

What'd he have to say about Barry Levinson and Diner?

Oddly, it didn't get mentioned.  He talked about Heaven's Gate, Body Heat, Rumble Fish, The Pope Of Greenwich Village, Year Of The Dragon (another Cimino film), Nine 1/2 Weeks, Angel Heart, Barfly, The Thin Red Line (in which his part was apparently cut) & Once Upon A Time In Mexico.  He liked all the directors except Schroeder, and while taking responsibility for his own actions which nearly landed him permanently (in his phrase) "on the shelf", he spoke about how political the movie business is & what a shame that talented people like Cimino & Eric Roberts are "on the shelf".
