KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 8/8/11

First time I've tuned in to Judge's show in weeks and he seems to be off. And whoever's subbing is playing entirely too much Natalie Cole.

somafm's Underground 80s channel just played Scritti Politti's Hypnotize (verb) - therefore my listening day is complete.

Earlier The Drive's 10at10 featured Fleetwood Mac's Hypnotized (adjective).

If someone plays The White Stripes - Hypnotize we will have a trifecta.

I'm goona switch over to that in a moment. Atlantic 2NG is playing Erasure's "Love to Hate You", so as soon as that ends...

ETA: nevermind -- couldn't get somafm's players to work for me. bummer.

ETA2: I ended up with KCDX and was rewarded with Zep's "Tangerine", which I seem to recall is about Jackie DeShannon (?)

1340 the Boardwalk never fails to gobsmack me wiith something I never would've expected to be considered "Beach Music", but lawdy: here's Jonathan Edwards, layin' 'round da shanty, mama, and gettin a good buzz on.  Presumably Jeebus doesn't let him do that any more.

this station can play some overheard songs, like I don't need to hear Eurythmic's Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This ever again, but if you stick with it, you get some treats. I just heard

Kraftwerk's Computer Love

and then

Sparks Mickey Mouse

Boo-yah!

(I remember standing in a super long line to buy Stones tickets in 1981 at a record store.  The clerk put on the just-released Computer World, probably just to piss off the Stones fans.  I'm pretty sure it worked!)

.. and here's some slight remix of

Scritti Politti's Perfect Way

Too bad you can't get the player Mike. They offer iTunes streams a (including a firewall/Proxy link) as well as their own pop-up player.

2NG's retro chart is from Aug 1980 today. Looking forward to some UK rarities.

But OMFG and TANC: before the chart show we get the Supes "No Matter What Sign You Are"! Your water sign just lit mah fire! Can't let astrology/chart our destiny!

NTM and Discovery of the Week: if this wasn't from 1980 you'd swear Sue Wilkinson was singing about the Kardashians...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdqFgOAM8Y0

ooo! Ultravox "Sleepwalk"!

Damn -- Jermaine Jackson's "Burnin' Hot" is also NTM. And holy crap: Gene Chandler making an '80s comeback with "Does She Have a Friend For Me?" -- these UK charts are just a treasure trove of unheard stuff. Kelly Marie (who?) with a British #1, the disco-y "Feels Like I'm in Love".

OMFG: Grace Jones covering the Pretenders' "Private Life", drama baby leave me OUT!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thtQngqG4vg

eek: ELO from Xanadu which was on TV the other night and is still dreadful.

Hot Choc's "Are You Getting Enough?" is another lost gem of theirs.

That Tom Browne -- he is a ordinary guy, huh huh huh.

can't miss AL's '75 but quite a UK top ten yet to come:

01.   ABBA - The Winner Takes It All
02.   Diana Ross - Upside Down
03.   Odyssey - Use It Up And Wear It Out
04.   Leo Sayer - More Than I Can Say
05.   Sheena Easton - Morning Train (9 To 5)
06.   Kate Bush - Babooshka
07.   The Gap Band - Oops Upside Your Head
08.   Bob Marley & The Wailers - Could You Be Loved
09.   Roxy Music - Oh Yeah (On The Radio)
10.   George Benson - Give Me The Night

sadly, no.  The countdown show does air 3 times a week, tho'. And it's just 2 hours -- they don't play all 40 songs, they skip most songs that were on the way down the chart, until they get to the Top 15 or so.

ETA: they just did an hour of off-the-wall instrumental hits that was awesome.

Oh, 1340 The Boardwalk how I (heart) thee: first a disco-y remake of Engelbert's "After The Lovin" (!) then the BeeGees' "Alone", their last US Top 40 hit from '97, then Jr Walker, holdin' on to the feelin'.

ETA: late-afternoon treat, the Dionne Warwick version of "Always Something There to Remind Me".

Listening to Larry Grogan's Funky 16 Corners Jerry Ragovoy tribute:

http://funky16corners.lunarpages.net/?page_id=615

(bottom of page, Show # 65)

I'd heard the originals of "Piece of My heart", "Cry Baby", "Stay With Me" many times but Howard Tate's "Get it While You Can" was NTM. Stunning.
