Offshore just played "Soul Deep" -- a coincidence, I'm sure (since their music is programmed far in advance afaik), but a lovely one..

like many, I came to know the music of Big Star just recently -- in the past 10 years or so -- and when I heard that Alex Chilton was still actually living at the time, I was surprised.  Why wasn't he still out there creating & touring, etc? 

It turns out he was, but maybe lightning wasn't going to strike a third time (Box Tops was first time, then Big Star was second), or maybe he had some personal problems that robbed him of reaching that creative level again -- the Replacements' Alex Chilton song wonders "would he feed us with a spoon" and sees him "checkin' his stash by the trash at St. Mark's place."   Anyway, I hope he was happy.

KPOO jock played this one last night:  Neon Rainbow by the Box Tops.
It was NTM, but it was their follow-up single to The Letter and charted at #24 in 1967. 
It's got a nice, lazy, dreamy feel...

ah yes, good one. If there's any doubt that they are lip-synching -- and there should be absolutely no doubt after you hear the few few notes -- check out 1:17 and watch standing guitarist do a double take as he keeps playing when the other musicians have stopped!  he's like d'oh!

I though The Letter was by The Animals - - Alex Chilton sounds a lot like Eric Burdon IMO.  I think a lot of people prob thought the same thing.  And when I heard that the guy named Alex Chilton was American, I was surprised.  (His name sounds so English, too.)  

After hearing his bluesy growl on that that song and his soulful take on songs like Soul Deep, it seems Alex was a great mimic early on.   He was singing *like* a singer who would sing those songs.  Listen to his higher, poppier stuff in Big Star and it's plain he was very aware of exactly how he should be singing on a given song or for a given genre.  Perhaps his natural voice is the one he used in Big Star, although it sounds like it's his "head voice" and not his true diaphragm-driven one.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't consider him a "singer" and much as a pop performer who could craft good tunes.  Still love his music, listening to "O My Soul" by BS right now, in fact.

Folks certainly thought he was a 40-year-old guy who smoked a lot of cigs and drank a lot of scotch. ;)  Indeed, I didn't find out until years later that we was 16 when he recorded "The Letter".

A memorial service is planned for Tues 3/30 in Memphis, with a tribute concert set for May 15 at the city's Levitt Shell in Overton Park. Details in the Memphis Commercial Appeal:
