I'll see your Shrimpton hair & raise you!

Just watched Peter Watkins' satirical Privilege the other night.  Stars Paul Jones as a pop star media product and Jean Shrimpton as the artist who tries to help him break out of his gilded gage.

The extras on the DVD Include a film done in 1962 called Lonely Boy, a documentary of the rising pop star Paul Anka. the Filmm Board of Canada produced it, and Peter Watkins made no secret that he based much of Privilege on the Paul Anka movie.

OMG -- Privilege is a MAJOR fave of mine, I've been urging Gaz to see it for years.  Great stuff, and very much of its time.  "And did those feet, in ancient time..."

yes, of a certain time for sure.  I had problems with the staging of some scenes (like the stadium scene), but Watkins did a lot with what he had.  (I also have at home his 5+ hour movie La Commune (Paris 1871), not sure if I'll get through it in one or even three sittings)

Yes, but he's lying through his teeth!  His videos of the period were aimed at turning everyone on!  Him in his impeccable attire for the ladies & the chicks in his 'backing band' for the gents.

I'm guessing maybe that's Herb Alpert on trumpet (since UB40 were on A&M).  He was busy in the '80s (see: "Diamonds" feat Janet Jackson)
