3 cheers for the fabulous Crown Heights Affair, soaring into the Galaxy of Love. Huge in the clubs back then, but largely unknown because they never had that crossover pop hit.

Another club hit that didn't cross over: KC & the Sunshine Band, "Sound Your Funky Horn."

This week Barry Scott does his yearly Top 100 countdown, based on listener requests.  In at #100, TANC, "Who Do You Think You Are?"

FYI, #1 is usually something uber-cheezy like "Seasons in the Sun."

Hey Mike: "Ariel" made it in at #98, nudging out "Watching Scotty Grow."  Is "Ariel" a common Jewish name?

Followed by the saddest disco song ever in its catching the notion of loneliness in a city of millions, Odyssey's pretty "Native New Yorker."

OMFGWTF!!!  The (apparently original) version of "Lady Marmalade," by an outfit called the 11th Hour.  Labelle performed some marvelous triage on this ailing patient.  What painfully bad Muppet-like lead vocals.  But they get credit for knowing more French than Patti, Sarah and Nona.

Barry's single edit of "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," which of course excises the spoken intro, has really amped up the percussion.  I'm liking it; wonder if that's a distinct mix or Barry's doing.

ETA: Barry confirmed: He played the 45, which is different from the others.

Wow, I didn't know I liked Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Out of the Question"!  I'll chalk up "Get Down" as an aberration, since I dig its predecessors too.

Oh, weird: Barry plays a (presumably recent) interview with Neil Sedaka in which he admits to "a parting of the ways" with Carole King that he hopes they "can mend soon."  Ooh girl!  OTOH, he calls her "the genius of all time" and said she wrote more hits than anyone, "even Smokey."

Of course the interview clip is followed by "Bad Blood."

"I Believe There's Nothing Stronger Than" Paul Anka.  But I'm usually displeased when there's a Strong Odia in the room.

I think Mr Friedman was poking some gentle fun at the notion of middle-class jews giving their kids NON-Jewish names. Like "Ariel"... and, er, "Dean".
