so naturally, I'm early today, and the Peak's stream is not working.  Missed Lene Lovich, "New Toy".

Yeah, I couldn't get it to wortk either.  But I was thinking '81:

Genesis    Man On The Corner
Lene Lovich    New Toy
Queen w/David Bowie    Under Pressure
Jim Carroll Band    It's Too Late
Police    Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Specials    Ghost Town
Greg Kihn Band    Breakup Song, The
Depeche Mode    Just Can't Get Enough
Rolling Stones    Waiting On A Friend
Pretenders    The Adultress
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

You're probably right -- the singles here are evenly divided between '81 & '82 on Top40db, but the Stones & Pretenders (which hadn't yet appeared when I posted) tip the scales.
