I have to ask this. Why is there rarely complaints when Dave plays stuff from the late 60's-early 70's when everyone has a bunch of stuff they don't care for in most of the other sets?? Every of those early sets seems to be "Good set", Great music" while 80's and 90's tend to be "Not much" etc. Is it because you folks grew up in the late 60's and early 70's. I find the 90's set not too impressive much, I grew up before then. I'm not saying today's set was great but it seems like every time an 80's set comes up it's never a "good" set.
It's a little of both... Yes, most of us prefer the '60s and '70s sets, as that tends to be the music of our childhoods/high school/college years. But the issue with '80s sets is that there seem to be many more Katrinas, and far more '80s sets are paint-by-numbers, with an overabundance of songs Dave relies on too much. Dave has *one* song he plays from the 3-LP set
Sandinista! ("Magnificent Seven") and 2 Michael Jackson songs to cover his entire output that decade. Dave is more reluctant to play soul/R&B in the '80s, period (we have *never* heard Janet Jackson, for example). A breakout never-before-played song is less likely to show up in the '80s sets, it seems. All the good songs in todays set (see below) have been featured many times. Dave's '70s sets are far more diverse, musically. And '60s sets are pretty rare (we get '68 & '69 every 6 weeks if we're lucky, and '67 -- maybe -- twice a year).
And the deeper we get into the late '80s/early '90s, OMG! Dave's pool of songs seems to shrink exponentially.
