Which I actually haven't heard since watching the Anthology series!  (They should've gone with "Real Love" as the first single.)
“The choir of children sing their song.  They've practiced all year long.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.  Ding dong.”

Guilty Displeasure: Son Volt, "Drown", or "that 'You're causin' it' song" as I referred to it back then.  Sorry, I know there are Son Volt worshippers here.

This cover of "Into the Mystic" by Todd Park Mohr (who?) is new to me. And not terribly interesting.

oops, he's the "Todd" of Big Head Todd & the Monsters (shows ya how much attention I paid to them).

Early Madeleine Peyroux coming up next.

"Always a Use". Interesting -- very different from her current Holiday-esque incarnation.  Could be BOS the way this set is going.

Guilty displeasure 3: "Lack of Water". Lack of interest on my part.

BOS2 Brian Setzer Orch, "Rumble in Brighton". But really, what does that say about this set?

this Keb Mo ("Just Like You") is new to me too.

This set suffers -- big time -- from Morey-itis, the reluctance to acknowledge anything from the year-in-question that wasn't on the stations playlist at the time.

I'd almost settle for "The Macarena" at this point

VHM Folk Implosion, "Natural One". I actually remember this one getting airplay, tho' maybe not on KFOG. Live 105, probably.

Wasn't Folk Implosion another of Lou Barlow's (Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh) projects?

And no worries about dissing Son Volt. Drown (the "Cousin Ed drowned" song) isn't their best on what was generally that bands high water mark, Trace. After that, Jay just got more obscure and verbose in his lyrics. I know he's still got some great songs in him but right now he's boring as dirt.
Let's get right to it.

Yup.  It ended up on the Kids soundtrack and got airplay from there.  One of the most depressing 90 mins I've ever spent in a movie theater.  Larry Clark: one creepy dude.

I thought I remembered '96 being more interesting than this set, so I got out my best-of-the-year tape for comparison. A sampling:

Pepper - Butthole Surfers
Popular - Nada Surf
You're One - Imperial Teen
Ladykillers - Lush
You Bowed Down - Elvis Costello
Charmless Man - Blur
Blue - LeAnn Rimes
Rowboat - Johnny Cash
Killing Me Softly - Fugees

Not to mention big hits by No Doubt, Clapton, Oasis...
