25 July 2014: it's a "classic" from... 1978
« on: July 25, 2014, 09:01:15 AM »
given how this week turned out, I don't have high hopes for today. (3 '80s sets in 7 days) By rights we should get a '68 or '69 set but I'm gonna guess it'll be more like '79.  Or worse yet, 2000.

and lo, it's '78 and "Radio Radio" with Elvis the C.

So what you're saying is, it could be anything? :)

I guess I was saying that they conspicuously avoided anything older than '75 this week.  Which is always distressing.

OK, 1978. That's kinda like '79...

So along with the AL1.0 reruns, we also get to hear the 1.0 theme music, with Huey and the rest. I am kinda liking that version now.

Let's get right to it.

One of several songs that made Heaven Tonight such a great record.  BOS.

**SPOILER**
(includes my comment when it first aired)

1/6/12 - Friday! Let's Turn on the RADIO-RADIO in 1978!

 1. Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Radio Radio
(Ad: Kraco car stereo)
 2. Cheap Trick - On Top of the World
(Movie: Heaven Can Wait - The place that comes after life and after dreams)
 3. Genesis - Follow You Follow Me
 4. Gerry Rafferty - Right Down the Line
(Movie: Animal House - Bluto smashes the folk singer's guitar)
 5. The Rolling Stones - Shattered
 6. A Taste of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie
(Ad: Weekends were made for...Michelob)
 7. Nick Gilder - Hot Child in the City
 8. Heart - Straight On
(Ad: Jovan Musk Oil perfume)
(Ad: House of Guitars - The Ramones as pitchmen - "Buy our records so we can buy these guitars!")
 9. The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated
10. Bruce Springsteen- Badlands (B.O.S!)

as often happens these days, this was a perfectly pleasant set that could've been so much better. You can pretty much tell which are the DC-mandated consultant-research records.

ETA: note this is the 2nd classic this week that ends with a Broooooce BOS.

Is the new "sweet spot" late '70's/early '80's? Four of the reruns fell between '75-'85.

True on both counts, but in both cases they were songs that *weren't* the big hit from their respective albums (She's the One from BTR rather than the title cut; Badlands from Darkness instead of Prove It All Night), but rather secondary tunes that might be skirting the edge of "deep cut" territory. There are several other songs in this set that could fit that description (Cheap Trick, Gerry Rafferty, Stones).
Let's get right to it.

BOS The Ramones Rocket To Russia ad. Truth in advertising: buy our record so we can buy more guitars.
