In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP Robert Hunter, 78
« on: September 24, 2019, 01:41:20 PM »

Robert Hunter, the poet famous for writing many of the Grateful Dead's best regarded songs, has died at 78.

"It is with great sadness we confirm our beloved Robert passed away yesterday night," Hunter’s family said
in a statement released to Rolling Stone.  "He died peacefully at home in his bed, surrounded by love.  His wife
Maureen was by his side holding his hand.  For his fans that have loved and supported him all these years,
take comfort in knowing that his words are all around us, and in that way his is never truly gone.  In this time
of grief please celebrate him the way you all know how, by being together and listening to the music.  Let there
be songs to fill the air."

KFOG's 10@10 / Re: 5 Sept 2019: 10@10 marathon

I am an amateur. But also, now that I see how beautifully MShray cleaned up my craptastic data scrapings, I would like to make this into a bonafide database. Or at least something that's more easily searchable and formatted.

Looking to see if there's any SMF modules that let have an arbitrary database that's searchable.
Darryl, let's get together sometime to go over the site's capabilities.  I'm getting overwhelmed by some of the tech stuff.
Happy to help where I can. I think the database thing would have to be separate. I was poking around the SMF docs and it seems strictly about forum stuff, which is fine. There's probably some way to slap a "search engine" in front of a Google Sheet...

Is there any facility for hosting files?  My setlists are plain text files and this board would be
a good place to make them available.

9:00 pm

03/07/2008 - FRIDAY!!!! It's a "Classic"...'70's Soul Patrol!!

FYI, this classic was aired earlier on Sunday, 10/10/2004, as part of that day's
ten 10@10s marathon in celebration of 10/10.

I can't fault the selection of today's sets... so far, five of them are in my collection of shows
that I recorded on cassette when they aired.

The TOTHC was Star by Stealers' Wheel. I think the 3rd song was Meadows by Joe Walsh.
Thanks — I wasn’t finding this set in the database.

I looked too, with the same result -- it must be pre-Shraytabase.

My setlists go back to late April, 2002, and I don't have it either, so it must be older than that.

Otherwise we seem to be getting a lot of show from 2005, a couple of which (SF, 1969)
I have on tape.

Per their FB page, Today (Wed 9/4) is a No Repeats "All Things Alternative" Wednesday, and tomorrow (9/5) is "For The Fogheads" -- they are soliciting song requests on FB, tho' I'm guessing most of the wackier suggestions I'm seeing (someone wants an entire Marillion album; yeah, sure, that might happen) won't make the cut :)

Best idea: "Thursday should be a marathon of old Dave Morey 10@10s"

Well, guess what: https://datebook.sfchronicle.com/entertainment/kfog-to-go-out-with-day-of-tributes-to-dave-morey-and-the-glory-years?fbclid=IwAR2wcIsCiiqUUsevMmhSO_7fY7nLG1Qr9200NiSqQmHAgCyMCnmwV7bWjL0

It's great hearing Dave Morey, 10@10s, and the like  on the radio machine again, but it's
a bittersweet pleasure.  It just underscores how much has been lost and will never be
coming back.

Someone else stole my suggestion that the last song should be "I Smoke 2 Joints".

Wasn't their unofficial (official?) theme song the Stray Cats' Rock This Town?  Although
that hardly seems appropriate, given the circumstances.  I agree that Smoke Two Joints
is an excellent choice for their swan song.

In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP Peter Fonda, 79
« on: August 17, 2019, 01:47:02 PM »

Peter Fonda, the tall, lanky actor who became a star and a counterculture sex symbol
in the film "Easy Rider," carrying on the Hollywood dynasty begun by his father, Henry
Fonda, died Friday in Los Angeles.  He was 79.

The death was confirmed by his family, who said the cause was respiratory failure
because of lung cancer.

In reference to the title of this thread, I've noticed that Youtube now occasionally plays
two pre-roll ads, and also sometimes runs an ad after a video finishes.

Simon & Garfunkle's The Sounds of Silence in a VW ad that suggests they are going
to introduce an all-electric, contemporary-styled vehicle inspired by the classic VW bus.
They should've made the VW bus chartreuse and used "Convoy" :)

The commercial is titled "Hello Light" and is one minute 45 seconds long.  It begins with
audio clips that explicitly reference VW's falsification of diesel emissions tests and seems
to tell the story of an engineer seeking to rehabilitate the company's image.  He looks for
inspiration in past designs, including the classic VW bus.  Near the end we get glimpses
of the I.D. Buzz, a concept car first shown in 2017, and scheduled to become a production
vehicle in 2022.
