If anybody has the phone number for Hell, please call and tell them to take their weather back!

Out here in the East Bay (wine country!), it was 108 Saturday, a "low" of 78, 106 on Sunday,
more of the same today and tomorrow.  Intense thumpers Sunday morning and the lightning
strikes have started several fires, including one in a nearby park.  I went out to get the paper
before nine o'clock and it was very humid, already near ninety, and smoke filled the air.  Now
the prevailing winds are blowing smoke from the Sunol Wilderness fire in our direction and when
you go outside it literally smells like standing next to a campfire.

Still I'm thankful that we don't live in the hills near any of the fires.  It's difficult to imagine being
subject to mandatory evacuation and having to leave everything behind, and worrying the
whole time if there will be anything left when you can return.

Hi, long time, no post (or lurk or anything, really),

So, I put together a 10 at 10! My first, in fact!  I used the Audacity app, which is pretty cool. I got almost all the way through before I learned I how to overlap and mix tracks.. which is AWESOME.  Anyway, give a listen if you are stuck at home or something... :)

How did you get the audio for your clips?  Is there a tool for getting the sound from
youtube videos, or did you use some other source?  I have a few ideas for sets I'd
like to make.

Just this very week I installed Audacity and started playing with it in preparation for
digitizing my cassette tapes -- including my 10@10 recordings.  It does seem like a
very nice piece of software, with lots of interesting and useful features.  A little
daunting at first, but with frequent references to their documentation and following
one of the tutorials I was able to get useful results in short order.  I've been splitting
some Dead shows where the sets were one big MP3 into separate tracks.  The
"Export Multiple" feature is very handy.  Very soon I'll be moving on to recording my
tapes.

It may be a few weeks before I start in on the 10@10 recordings, and a few months
before I have the first batch ready for sharing.  I have about 160 shows in all, so
realistically it will be a year or more before I finish them all, as I have a few dozen
other tapes to do as well.

It's been a couple of months, but...

The Troggs' Wild Thing for Geico

The Zombies' Time of the Season for Coors

Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass for Ford F-150 trucks

The Isley Brothers' It's Your Thing for H & R Block's do-it-yourself software

And two for Applebees that actually made some sense -- The Four Tops'
Sugar Pie Honey Bunch, and Baby One More Time by Britney Spears
for the return of their all-you-can-eat riblets.

Is there a name for those snippets of music that get played going into a commercial
during (sports) broadcasts?

Anywho, someone running the Niners coverage must be a Deadhead.  During the
divisional playoffs they played a bit of Estimated Prophet ("California!  A prophet on
the burning shore...").  During the NFC championship game, it was a brief piece of
Saint of Circumstance ("This must be heaven, tonight I cross the line...").  And once
going into a commercial during the Superbowl, we heard the opening notes of Bertha.

Some of these have been airing for weeks, but they're rattling around in my head and I want
them out...

Toots & the Maytals' Pressure Drop in a Coors ad ostensibly aimed at women.

Tomoyasu Hotei's Battle Without Honor or Humanity was used to great effect in Tarantino's
Kill Bill:  Volume One, and overused by others since then -- this time to tout Audi's electric
SUV.

Fidelity Investments  taps a couple of mid-80s hits:  Roxy Music's More Than This and
Tears for Fears' Everybody Wants To Rule the World.

And on a seasonal note, the Waitresses' bouncy Christmas Wrapping appears in commercial
for Nissan's year-end clearance sale.

The Fixx's Saved By Zero for Fidelity Investments, because they have zero account fees and
zero minimums.  The song was also used in a Toyota ad back in 2008 because they were
offering zero percent auto financing.

I can't imagine this hasn't been noted before, but it just dawned on me that I've been seeing the Kraft cheese commercials, featuring Enya's "Only Time" for quite a while!

I've heard it, but I didn't know the song title.  It's one of the only two or three Enya songs I like.
(One of which is, of course, Orinoco Flow, which has also been used for at least one commercial.)

Here's one that actually makes some sense -- the Vogues' Turn Around, Look At Me in an
ad touting the Volkswagon Tiguan's rear view camera system.

In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP Ginger Baker, 80
« on: October 06, 2019, 05:26:30 PM »

Ginger Baker, esteemed as one of the most virtuosic drummers ever to sit behind a kit
through his innovative work with English rock bands Cream and the short-lived Blind Faith,
died on Sunday.  He was 80.

His Facebook page posted, "We are very sad to say that Ginger has passed away peacefully
in hospital this morning.  Thank you to everyone for your kind words over the past weeks."
Baker’s family had previously issued statements on Twitter and Facebook saying that he was
"critically ill" and asking fans to "please keep him in your prayers."

Baker revealed in 2013 that he had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease after a lifetime
of smoking.  He underwent open-heart surgery in 2016.  He also suffered chronic back pain
from degenerative osteoarthritis.
