Yesterday the "Highway 1 Detour" was billed as the new music hour, but it looks like they are actually going to do a different theme each today. Today's was live tracks.

96.5 HD-2 Different can now be heard online and has rebranded as...

Highway 1 Radio

I listened for a few hours. A couple notes:
  • They dropped everything pre-80s (not that there was much before) and are focusing a lot more on current music. Probably a good decision as IMO their new music was really the only thing worth tuning into for, their golds were pleasant but pointless
  • New music hour at 1:00 called "Highway 1 Detour"
  • Imaging always pandered to local-ness but they really have taken it up a notch in that regard, especially with the new name.
  • Same can't be said about music selection though (at least at this point); BUT according to their Facebook page they are setting up a submission email where musicians can submit their music to, and are talking about adding a local music show and soliciting names
  • I'm still not sure what they're doing this for, most likely just a passion project

KOIT 96.5 flipped to all Christmas a few weeks ago, as usual. However, they put their regular programming on HD-3 and kept "96.5 HD-2 Different" on HD2. It's pretty clear they want to keep their HD AAA around, for some reason.

They've expanded to KUFX-HD2 (98.5-2) as well.

I've been listening to 96.5 HD-2 a lot the last week...but it's just not connecting for me. The first few weeks they played a lot of AAA standards from the past decade but recently they've been moving away from that and getting more and more vanilla, and their recurrents/golds -- while AAA friendly -- are mostly songs that were also gigantic on Pop/Hot AC and you could still probably hear on Alice...or even KOIT (i.e. Tonic - If You Could Only See.) Probably the most AAA-specific of anything they play older than two years old is Jack Johnson. Their current selection isn't huge, but it's slightly (though only slightly) better. I guess I can't complain about hearing new songs by the Raconteurs and Local Natives, though I think they still play too much Lumineers and Billie Eilish.

I'm still trying to figure out what they're doing, though. They have put a lot of effort into sweepers that are pandering to local-ness (i.e. a millenial-sounding girl's voice saying "I like to walk my dog at Golden Gate Park and see a show at the Balboa Theater!!" and using the tagline "uniquely San Francisco" even though there is really nothing unique about the playlist at all IMO) as well as a "this month in music history" sweeper which is kind of interesting. And once in awhile (usually in the evenings), I actually hear a live DJ. But their playlist is as generic as it gets and doesn't seem to lean towards any time period. So they have put effort into it, but I have no clue why someone would want to start a new milquetoast AAA format on a HD-2 frequency in 2019. Maybe they're trying to see if it's worth putting it on one of their other main frequencies, or maybe they're just throwing a bone to disenfranchised KFOG listeners.

Their website (which doesn't have much, but at least they have one) is www.96hd2.com

Unrelated rant: not sure who this Big-A guy is on the KFOG topic on Radio Discussion forums but he’s getting on my nerves...quite arrogant which wouldn’t be so bad except that he’s wrong about nearly everything, and tries to change the topic when he’s called out.

New ratings out: granted, a lot of fluctuations this month... the Bone drops back to a 3.3 from last month's highest-ever 4.0, and Alt 103.5 is up to a 2.2, their highest in some time. But man: KFOG falls from a 1.6 to a 1.0 -- their lowest-ever. Not even after the purge of April 2016 did they fall THAT low.

Could KFOG dumping their South Bay transmitter have something to do with that? Regardless, it looks like Live/Alt 105 is winning the battle that nobody asked for.

Although this is a minor move, it's one I never saw coming. 96.5 KOIT's HD-2 station flipped to AAA, and is calling itself "Different." I've been listening to it. It's a pretty standard AAA that skews more recent. Lots of 90s, 00s, and 10s (but not stuck in the 90s), occasionally something from the 80s. Nothing too adventurous yet, though maybe they will be later.

https://koit.com/96-5-hd2/

I was genuinely surprised because nobody seems to care about HD2 or AAA anymore. Most AAA stations just ended up getting pushed to their HD2 frequency when they flipped formats, so if KFOG didn't end up on either 97.7 HD2 or 104.5 HD2 then I thought that market #4 was officially done with AAA.

Then again, Bonneville isn't exactly a Clear Channel, Cumulus, Entercom, or even Alpha. The sale of the four stations from CBS/Entercom just completed and even though branding for "Different" is at this point minimal, it's clear that they're paying attention. They seem to like AAA (hence KSWD, which didn't last but they put up a good fight. LA is also a difficult market for AAA; it's much easier in SF, and should have worked here for any company that puts minimal effort.) I wonder if they're just using this as something to have fun with, or if they have bigger plans (i.e. flipping one of their other stations to AAA.) If they flipped, not sure which one it would be...all four of them are doing fairly well.
