Stream of Consciousness / Re: The Concert Thread
« on: November 21, 2017, 10:13:27 AM »
Went to see Tedeschi Trucks Band last night at the Fox.  The highlight for me was the cover of Neil Young's "Alabama".  Inspired.  It was followed by "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free" where the backup singers got their moments in the spotlight.  Combined, it was both transcendent and heartbreaking.  And thoroughly topical.

Speaking of Heartbreakers, they also covered "You Don't Know How It Feels" in a mini tribute to Tom Petty. Wasn't a highlight, exactly, but a heartfelt tribute.

Susan Tedeschi is improving as a guitarist, and brought the house down when, after a competent and extended solo, she continued with the guitar behind the head trick.  Jimi Hendrix she ain't, but it was a fun moment.

Excellent show, Derek was awesome, there were flute solos, trumpet solos, organ solos, etc. etc. And Susan was in fine voice.

Sounds like a great show. For me, TTB is probably the hottest live band right now, but I have extremely limited sampling data in the last few years!

Heard nothing but good things about them, but I have yet to see them in person. Time was, I'd have been all over that, but I guess the years are starting to catch up with me. Next tour for sure.

The WMCA survey, this week in '69:

http://www.musicradio77.com/wmca/surveys/1969/surveynov1269.html

Very cool to see these snapshots of charts gone by. It's weird though, that there are a couple of albums (Abbey Road and Zep II) scattered in among the singles. Any idea how that comes to pass?

Yes, ten songs by dead artists. Including one by the Dead. Heh.

Not only dead, but members of the "27 club" aka dead by age 27. So as far as the GD are concerned, they're talking about Pigpen, not Jerry or any of their other deceased keyboardists.

Here I was hoping it was protest songs.

The FCC today approved removal of the rule requiring radio stations to maintain a "main studio" in the community in which they're licensed. This will allow radio conglomerates to manage and program stations in multiple markets without having to actually have a physical presence there beyond a phone number.

If the community service part of their license requirements weren't eliminated before this, they certainly are now.

The frontman of the Tragically Hip, who was a hugely popular troubadour with a stature rivalling Dylan or Springsteen in Canadian music while being barely known in the US, died of brain cancer. His final album comes out this week.

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I moved up to Santa Rosa in February.

So far I'm okay, except for the smoke and unhappy dogs because I won't let them out into the smoke.  My heart goes out to those in neighboring areas.  Let's all hope the wind stays down and the firefighters can get some containment.

Wow -- stay safe, buddy.

Yikes. Hope you remain upwind of the flames.

The New 10@10 / Re: 5 October 2017: it's... The Essential Tom Petty

10/5:

On today’s edition of Soundwaves 10@10, we pay tribute to music legend Tom Petty,
who died at the young rock and roll age of 66. From his hits with the Heartbreakers
and Stevie Nicks to his live album with Bob Dylan and supergroups Traveling Wilburys
and Mudcrunch, these are the essential songs for the man who once claimed “You Got
Lucky.” Yep, we sure did.
Good set, but Mr. Willis insisted on saying "Mudcrunch". Ou(n)ch. He said it that way several times, so no slip of the tongue. It's funny how many little details he seems to have trouble with.

Boy, you weren't kidding. Def not a misspeak.

An OK set, but as I am given to saying, too many overplayed hits, not enough deep tracks. Which is why I don't make a habit of listening to this 10@10 anymore.

The New 10@10 / Re: 12 September 2017: it's... Top 10 Tuesday (1976)

10. Bee Gees – You Should Be Dancing
 9. Chicago – If You Leave Me Now
 8. War – Summer
 7. Cliff Richard – Devil Woman
 6. Boz Scaggs – Lowdown
 5. Lou Rawls – You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine
 4. Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band – A Fifth Of Beethoven
 3. England Dan & John Ford Coley – I’d Really Love To See You Tonight
 2. KC and The Sunshine Band – (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty
 1. Wild Cherry – Play That Funky Music

Kinda lame that both this set and the 70s Instrumental set from the previous week include A Fifth of Beethoven. C'mon, you couldn't have come up with ONE other song to replace it in one or the other of these sets (or even better, two -- as that song is kinda cheesy in the first place).

Stream of Consciousness / Re: KFOG, But Not 10@10
« on: August 01, 2017, 06:33:54 PM »
Looks like their shifts have been tossed up too. The program page still says "Mornings on KFOG" for the AM drive, with Alicia Tyler doing 9 to noon and Rockwell in the early PM slot. But Tyler's bio now says she's doing 6am to 10, so no telling who's got 10am to noon, or if Rockwell's shift has been expanded.

Also, the schedule shows Rockwell on every day of the week, including weekends. I suppose some of that could be voice-tracked but, still, jeez.

Eric Clapton’s cover of a Bob Marley classic

No, really?  (rolls eyes)  And "Sweet Home Ala-bummer" TOO??  Good gawd.

Oh, and the setlist ID's "Sweet Jane" as being the Velvet Underground. Sheesh.

The set was did not warrant a listen, imo, so I was wondering if we were to hear the original "Sweet Jane" in the wrong year, or if it was the Lou Reed, Rock and Roll Animal version in the right year.  I assumed the latter.  But I wasn't going to sit through "The Loco-Motion" or "Hooked on a Feeling" to find out.  At least the second half of the set is somewhat listenable, if not very necessary.

It was indeed the Lou Reed live version. Setlist also credits "Whatever Gets you thru the Nite" to Elton John (tho' he does play backup). He also played the "Mr Microphone" TV commercial clip in the wrong year (it's from '78 or '79 at the earliest, iirc) for the second time. Somebody had a bad Monday!

Not only did the setlist attribute Sweet Jane to the Velvets, but that's what DW said in the backsell. Major fail.
