KFOG's 10@10 / Wednesday March 16--It's 1975!
« on: March 16, 2005, 10:00:49 AM »
Never heard Dave tip the year in the pre-spin spiel before!

And he said before the commercials that it would include the best TV show theme song of the decade. Bob Newhart (the big band version)? That'd get my vote.

Stream of Consciousness / Man on the street
« on: February 25, 2005, 02:09:06 PM »
Was just walking across Howard at New Montgomery, and as I reached the other side, I just about ran into Peter Finch coming out of the California Big & Tall store there. Had he not been wearing a KFOG sweatshirt, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

No point. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Not the 90s set Mike predicted, but close enough.

This Fab T-birds TOTHC is kinda cool though--likely a bust-out, or at least I don't recall ever hearing it.

Don't think I saw this before today. In Oklahoma City last Saturday, of a long-term illness.

And I just heard Help Me Make It Through the Night yesterday, albeit Gladys Knight's version.

Mike, they've been playing all the song you love to miss--Magneto and Titanium Man about an hour ago, and now I just picked up my 'phones in time to hear "Some Girls." For the record, DDT does the same thing with "black girls just want to get f***ed all night" that Dave does with "I'm so f***ing special" in Creep.  The new curse for the Bush era: Black girls get kcufed all night and Thom Yorke is so kcufing special.

Btw, in England the initials FCUK are all over the place, on busses and billboards, t-shirts and taxis, but of course, your eye wants to see something else. Stands for "French Connection United Kingdom."

Stream of Consciousness / St. Paul
« on: February 22, 2005, 10:03:10 AM »
Saw a FABULOUS show by Paul Westerberg last night at the Music Hall that at times encompassed the raving "who knows what he's gonna do next" ethos of the 'Mats heyday, with a bit more temperance and a bit less sloppy playing to boot. He played a good number of tunes off his latest, but there was a healthy helping of Replacements tunes too, from his opening salute (Merry Go Round) to his final send-off (Left of the Dial) and a whole bunch in between (Kiss Me on the Bus, I'll Be You, Achin to Be, I Will Dare, Alex Chilton, Skyway, several more) and a complete cover of I Think I Love You followed by a couple of dozen bars of Zep's Ten Years Gone. (I was crushed when he bailed out of this one--he'd played enough of it that I thought he was really gonna do it.) And he even shed some blood for his audience--he was cut on the side of his head after he smacked his guitar over an amp near the end of the set for reasons unclear. Pretty shocking, but it sure put  charge into the crowd (not that we needed it.)

The show of the year so far, unquestionably.

Stream of Consciousness / Ree-ree at the Fillmore
« on: February 17, 2005, 09:57:57 AM »
No, not now, silly. In 1971.

Rhino Handmade is releasing a four-disc set of her performances with King Curtis (and Ray Charles sittin' in) at the "Fillmore West theater" in "the heart of the Haight-Ashbury." (Some copywriter at Rhino/WEA should really consult a map--neither the Fillmore or the Fillmore West were anywhere near the Haight.)

Anyway, here's a link for more details:
http://www.rhinohandmade.com/browse/ProductLink.lasso?Number=7890

A mere $79.98 will get you one of 5,000 limited-edition copies. Very tempting, but not at that price.

Btw, if you've ever noticed the photo of Aretha that's hanging in the lobby (or is it the bar?)at the Fillmore, you'll recall that it's a mirror image of the one that's on the cover. They flopped it.

Stream of Consciousness / 1973 set CDs ready
« on: February 15, 2005, 09:40:20 PM »
Remember that '73 set from a few weeks back that I offered to record and distribute CDs of? Well, in typical urth-time, it's finally done. Mark and Alicat, I have your mailing addresses (miracle of miracles!). But POC and Rod, I need yours, and that goes for anyone else that would like a copy, too. Just go to the memberlist and use the little button by my name to e-mail me your data.

And then be patient again, as the only thing that takes me longer than recording these sets to disc is getting the damn things in the mail.  :)

I'm off to Tahoe for the weekend for some snowshoeing, frolicking in the snow, sitting by a fire, and just hanging with some old pals. Back on Monday, probably rather sore.
cheers,
Jim

Stream of Consciousness / The South will rise again
« on: February 11, 2005, 11:57:43 AM »
This may not get traction with everyone here, but any fans of good ol', seventies style Southern rock (think Lynyrd Skynyrd, or maybe Danny Whitten-era Crazy Horse) should check out this band the Drive-By Truckers. I picked up their most recent, "The Dirty South" at Amoeba a couple weeks back and am really enjoying it. Sounds as though it could have been recorded in 1972 or so. They do have somewhat of a pedigree in the Southern rock genre: their leader, Patterson Hood, is the son of David Hood, who was the staff bassist at Muscle Shoals Studios and played with everyone from Boz Scaggs to Aretha to Duane Allman to Percy Sledge to Traffic and beyond. It might be a bit heavy for KFOG's World Class Rock format, but I could hear perhaps the Bone picking this up. Pretty great stuff.

Stream of Consciousness / KFOG's president's day programming
« on: February 10, 2005, 05:39:38 PM »
They're taking a poll to see what people want to hear on President's Day, since the entire staff save a couple of engineers will be taking the day off.

Here's the standings so far:

Beatles A to Z: nothing but The Beatles...in alphabetical order  38%
All Archives: exclusive, live KFOG archives tracks, all day long  20%
Rock of Ages: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and Now - song by song  23%
Acoustic Sunrise: an expanded version of KFOG's mellow Sunday music  19%
