...Carlos Alomar gets a cabinet position just for the licks on Fame.

from http://davidbowienews.com/2014/08/exclusive-carlos-alomar-qa-carlos-answers-the-questions-you-sent-in/

Hi Carlos,

If you were stranded on an Island, and you could have just one Bowie song to play, which one would it be?

C A/ Well, that’s easy… Somebody up there likes me. For many reasons…The total experience of first meeting David and finally working with him. Plus, David’s’ vocal performance is stellar. My wife Robin Clark and my best friend Luther Vandross are singing background vocals, so it’s easy to see why this song (to this day) pretty much expresses my gratitude for my life.

I'm going apeshit on Bowie's discography. So much to adore. Tony Visconti for president!  Carlos Alomar gets a cabinet position just for the licks on Fame.

I'm listening to his Deram label self-titled 1967 debut. So very Moodies meets the showtune side of Steve Marriott - I wonder if they ever met over laying the same bloke? Some Keith West and CERTAINLY Giles Giles & Fripp in there, too.  ([Or vice versa, more likely, given the timing of the respective records referred to.)

I listened to Space Oddity last night on headphones, which was unsettling. The stereo separation revealed vocal harmonies that I had never heard before.  He's singing dual tracks, one left ear, one right.  I think I like the mono version of this.

"Mono works in every case, bitches."
 -- Abraham Lincoln

ok, onward...

"Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" --> "Tired of Toein' the line". BOS from me, I love this one.

Nice. The Urban Cowboy trend is getting some serious love this time around. Juice Newton next?

And is this one a bustout? Could be.

I have the soundtrack to Urban Cowboy on vinyl somewhere.  I wish my turntable worked.

There's not much in his 70s output that's not worth checking into. I'd start with Hunky Dory and just go forward from there.

which is what I'm doing. HD is on now. Rick Wakeman!

Five Years

This one always gives me chills. Another BOS.

(This one is off the Bowie at the Beeb album, too, I believe.)

ah, didn't sound like the Ziggy version  I admit I don't know Bowie's albums very well. I know so many of his songs, but I never owned any of his records until much later.   I would like to hear which of his records you like, how they rank.

I'd put Young Americans up there as a listenable fave. Those songs are pretty accessible and I have to thank Dave Morey for revealing "Somebody Up There Likes Me" as I'm pretty sure it was on 10at10 that I first heard it -- or where it first made an impression.

well-hung Ziggy plays guitar like some cat from Japan.

I always thought he was singing "He was the 'nads."  :P

I heard the "Stay" songs earlier today, and they did not play David Bowie's "Stay".  Bummer.

Lisa Loeb got a spin, of course.

Songs I thought had a chance but was disappointed not to hear:

Thomas Dolby - I Love You Goodbye

That's surprising, given its popularity on 10@10 (and the 10@10 bias this A-to-Z has been showing).

Speaking of, I just tuned in and they were playing all-time LN "Walls Came Down" by the Call. Which means A-to-Z should easily wrap up before midnight tomorrow night.

That song files under "The"  -- "The Walls Came Down" -- so that will spread it out more.

Happy New Year!  My first set of 2016 features Bruce Springsteen songs as performed by others:

Well done. Thanks for including Natalie Cole. I had no idea she recorded Pink Cadillac until I was poking around on Youtube after hearing about her death. I prefer her version to Aretha's now.

It occurred to me today that this is the first year in quite a few that I haven't heard the Cal Academy of Sciences "Tis the Season for Science" commercial where they parody various Xmas carols.

I've heard it ... the one with "Jack Frost nipping at your proboscis?"  Maybe it was some other station, though; except for 10at10, I avoid KFOG.

Great set, and it's hard to choose one BOS.  I like "Harold & Maude" so all the segues pulled some extra weight.

I thought for sure she'd mention the Winter Solstice after playing Richie Havens' HCTS.

I can understand why KGO-TV would devote so many
minutes on their "news" programs to flog the movie

KTVU news (not owned by Disney, I'm pretty sure) was flogging the hell out of the movie too (leading to some awkward segues like "Hey Sal, have you been using the force to get people through the backup on 24?").  So I really think that the marketing blitz/cultural phenomenon just hit critical mass, and if you weren't talking about SW, then there was a perceived risk of losing viewers to people who were.

Good insight there, LR.
