« on: March 10, 2010, 08:59:12 AM »
Dean Ormsby Torrence of Jan & Dean is 70 today.  Normally I wouldn't have noticed enough to post here, but after seeing The T.AM.I. Show on KQED last night I have to give him props.

Go, Sidewalk Surfer! Go!

In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / Happy Birthday, Dr. MLK Jr.

His birthday is observed today, but the work continues.

Interesting article I found via wikipedia:

Dethroning a King

"The best way to deal with a dangerous radical like King is to domesticate him. Claim him. Say you love him. Give him a national 'holy' day, and in doing so, you can stand free from any claims he might have upon us"

Judge on KPOO (my man! says Mike) just played a song that was probably titled Can You Love A Virgin Man?  probably the coolest sounding song about a guy who's still a virgin.  This song sounds so cool, he's bound to get laid now!

ETA: it seems that was Smokey Robinson...

Neil Young's Birthday
==================
1. Down By The River
2. Hello Mr Soul - Buffalo Springfield
3. Heart of Gold  --- one of two Neil songs I can think of that start with "I want to live.."
4. Downtown - (from Mirror Ball) -- sort of NTM... basic, raw, I like it.
5. Unknown Legend -- I occurs to me that Mercury Rev's singing style owes a bit to Neil.  I'll throw Flaming Lips and Polyphonic Spree in there, too, among many others.
6. Like a Hurricane
7. Lotta Love -- BOS!
8. Ohio - CSNY
9. Only Love Can Break Your Heart  (live) - CSNY BOS2
10. Expecting To Fly - Buffalo Springfield BOS3!!!

Some good NY-centric selections, like BJ's Angry Young Man, Blondie's X-Offender, Ramones' I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend

Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey was NTM, good political reggae -- that's redundant, right?

Ridin' the Storm Out - REO Speedwagon
Kodachrome - Paul Simon
Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight & the Pips
D'yer Maker - Led Zeppelin

Cisco Kid - War
Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed

BOS Gladys and her Pips (she should really have a doctor check that out), proxy of Shray for REO (does Kevin Cronin say "Last song, people!" in the live version?).  5:15 is always good to hear...

BOS Ray Charles!

Lamenting the demise of the LA Angels, he remarks that the Billy Joel song was sort of sent out to any Yankee fans that are in town, and that's the last time we'll hear him say something like that. :)
