In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP Jim Marshall, of Marshall Amps, 88
« on: April 05, 2012, 09:17:34 AM »
From Wall St Journal: Jim Marshall, the inventor who changed the sound of rock music, has died at age 88.  A drummer by trade, in the early ‘60s Marshall invented what became known as the Marshall JTM 45 guitar amplifier, seen by many guitarists as an improvement over the then-state-the-art Fender Bassman.  In subsequent years, Marshall, who had been selling musical equipment out of a small shop in London, increased the effectiveness of the amps, which continue to be fitted with his name in white script against a black background.
Marshall amplifiers caught on with rock guitarists to the point that they seemed ubiquitous:  A so-called “wall of Marshalls” or “Marshall stacks” stood behind almost every rock guitarist of note in the ‘60s and ‘70s including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Tommy Iommi, Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend as well as next-generation guitarists Kurt Cobain, Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash, Eddie Van Halen and Angus Young, among many others.  Some bands used a tower of empty Marshall amp cabinets as a prop to suggest power and success.

From NY Times: Warren Stevens was a lanky, square-jawed actor whose face became familiar through his more than 100 roles on television and in movies over six decades.  A stage actor in the '40s, he became a versatile and ubiquitous presence on television in the ’50s. He played three different characters on episodes of “Have Gun, Will Travel” between 1957 and 1963; three different characters on “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” between 1965 and 1967; four characters on “Bonanza” between 1965 and 1970; and four on “Ironside” between 1967 and 1975.  His other more than 60 television roles included appearances (and sometimes recurring roles) on “Return to Peyton Place,” “The Twilight Zone,” “M*A*S*H,” “Rawhide,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E” and “Gunsmoke.”  Perhaps his best-known role was in the classic 1956 science fiction movie “Forbidden Planet.”  He played the ill-fated Doc Ostrow, who perishes at the hand of a mysterious force on the planet Altair IV, 16 light years from Earth, after his spaceship arrives to search for a long-lost colony.   He was 92.

So it looks like a grand time was had by all at the G-snipe wingding last night. Who of our number made appearances? I saw a few of y'all in various pics but there may have been others who were ducking the cameras. Glad to see that AL did indeed make an appearance. And the mysterious Mr. Dunn revealed his true self. Any good stories? Surprises? Those of us who are geographically challenged are waiting with baited breath.
(How does one bait one's breath, anyway?)
From this group, Wayback, Lightnin' Rod, sundaygal, RGMike, lattegal, Tinka Cat and myself. Also, about 15 other GSers, including of course AL. Inasmuch as I could tell, a smashing time was had by all. You'll have to let us know about your next Bay Area appearance so we can schedule something.
Geoff & wife Martha were there too.  The bar was small, narrow, crowded so hard to really meet and talk with everyone, but a grand time was had by all.  Jim, we'll all have to attend a Giants game!

In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP Michael Hossack, Doobie Brother, 65
« on: March 13, 2012, 02:18:11 PM »
Saw them perform most recently Dec 2010 at the KFOG Concert For Kids at Nob Hill Masonic. The day after that show the Doobies did an in-store appearance just a block from my office at the SF Apple Store (because of being added to iTunes, I presume).  I was walking by on way to catch train after work, they were boarding a van about to leave, the side doors were open so I took a minute to say hello and shake their hands.  Cool.
