KFOG's 10@10 / Re: 5 Jan 2018: Interesting news...
« on: January 06, 2018, 06:05:59 AM »
Count me in the "that's nice but I'm not getting excited crowd".

If it's done really well, then to gould's point it'll be water under the bridge. But I just can't say I have enough faith in KFOG to do that right now. But I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Oddly enough, this has the same theme as a musical thread at a fairly recent trivia night.

In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / Re: RIP Pat DiNizio, 62

Sad to hear this. Managed to be somewhat underrated in spite of KFOG giving them decent coverage.

DiNizio, the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of the Smithereens, has died. No cause of death has been revealed, nor the location of his passing.

Standard stuff -- and really, I never need to hear "Hey Jude" ever again --  but I wonder if we'll get the loooong version of the Chambers Bros hit.   Not sure what the "first charted as an instrumental" song is.

I'm guessing "Soulful Strut" ("Am I The Same Girl?")

Sadly no -- that was my guess too before I saw the list.

1. Tommy James and the Shondells – Mony Mony
2. Georgie Fame – The Ballad Of Bonnie And Clyde
3. Classics IV – Spooky
4. Merrilee Rush And The Turnabouts – Angel Of The Morning
5. Ohio Express – Yummy Yummy Yummy
6. Marvin Gaye – Heard It Through The Grapevine
7. Archie Bell And The Drells – Tighten Up
8. 5th Dimension – Stoned Soul Picnic
9. Johnny Nash – Hold Me Tight
10. Chambers Brothers – Time Has Come Today
BONUS: Beatles – Hey Jude

So this bothered me too... it may well be "Spooky", originally an instrumental by somebody named Mike Sharpe. Trusty Wiki!

The New 10@10 / Re: 12 September 2017: it's... Top 10 Tuesday (1976)
« on: September 21, 2017, 05:38:06 AM »
D'oh! Next time I'll pay closer attention.

The whole set screams "Let's dial in 1976 and put absolutely no effort into it". And I like most of the songs, but sheesh... if Renee had put this set together the Snipes would've gone nuclear.

Well, sure, it's Top Ten Tuesday, he found a list of songs that were in the top ten on this day and played them.  It's what Top Ten Tuesdays are all about, a document of a moment in time, not a creative effort.

It is unfortunate that A Fifth of Beethoven appeared in both the 70's instrumental set and this one (or either one, but that's a matter of taste).  But the Instrumental set came before this one, and he may not have thought that far ahead to know that it was going to show up in the top 10 for this day.

10. Bee Gees – You Should Be Dancing
 9. Chicago – If You Leave Me Now
 8. War – Summer
 7. Cliff Richard – Devil Woman
 6. Boz Scaggs – Lowdown
 5. Lou Rawls – You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine
 4. Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band – A Fifth Of Beethoven
 3. England Dan & John Ford Coley – I’d Really Love To See You Tonight
 2. KC and The Sunshine Band – (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty
 1. Wild Cherry – Play That Funky Music

Kinda lame that both this set and the 70s Instrumental set from the previous week include A Fifth of Beethoven. C'mon, you couldn't have come up with ONE other song to replace it in one or the other of these sets (or even better, two -- as that song is kinda cheesy in the first place).

The whole set screams "Let's dial in 1976 and put absolutely no effort into it". And I like most of the songs, but sheesh... if Renee had put this set together the Snipes would've gone nuclear.

9/14:

On today’s edition of Soundwaves 10@10, we salute the anniversary of iconic San Francisco
radio station KFOG by playing the first ten songs exactly the way they were heard on September
16th, 1982! If you grew up listening to Bay Area radio, you’re not going to want to miss one!

I'm guessing that in 2051, Soundwaves will not do the same for KFOG's last ten songs.

8/02:

On today’s edition of Soundwaves 10@10, we’ll hear the ballad from two heavy metal stars
that turned out to become the biggest hit of both their careers, and the dancefloor single
from two of soul’s biggest icons that had the opposite result!

I'm guessing:

1) "Close My Eyes Forever"
2) "It Wasn't, It Isn't, It Ain't Ever Gonna Be"

Wow, sure don't remember this cover of Funkytown. Is it Wang Chung?

That was a long-time request of mine for Morey, AL, Renee. Never played.

Loreena McKennit (sp?) gets the BOS. I never heard her on the radio. It took 10 more years and RadioParadise for me to hear her music.

Love the song, though it was surprisingly a decent-sized CHR hit at the beginning of 1998 (and debuted on the Top 40 the same week as that Will Smith song):

I'm wondering if the album cut or the single was played. Definitely a left field hit, but also one of the era's highlights.

03/03:

On today’s edition of Soundwaves 10@10, we’ll play ten classic songs that inexplicably never
made it to the Top 40 when originally released. In some cases, they barely made the Top 100 –
or were never released as singles at all. Today, we salute the songs destined for greatness,
even if nobody knew it at the time.

 1. Bow Wow Wow, I Want Candy
 2. Jimi Hendrix Experience, Purple Haze (1967)
 3. Joni Mitchell, Big Yellow Taxi
 4. Billy Idol, Dancing with Myself
 5. Journey, Lights
Super Hit 6. Modern English, I Melt With You
 7. Louis Armstrong, What a Wonderful World
 8. New Order, Bizarre Love Triangle
 9. The Eagles, Tequila Sunrise
10. No Doubt, Don’t Speak
BONUS: Stevie Wonder, Isn’t She Lovely?

Some of these are more of a function of not having a single being released, not that they couldn't have been a Top 10 hit if Billboard hadn't changed its methodology. #10 in particular spent an ungodly amount of time at #1 on the airplay-only chart.
