They say old habits die hard.

Although I have largely moved into the aughts and most often listen to MP3s,
when I can I still greatly enjoy shopping at the used CD stores.  It's the
thrill of the hunt, I guess.  (I don't ever expect to duplicate my 800+
album collection, but I hope to get most of my favorites.  As far as I know,
some, like Tonto's Expanding Head Band, have never been released on CD.)
I've noted the passing of Gary Brooker, vocalist and keyboard player for
Procol Harum, one of my favorite bands from back in the day, and not long
ago I purchased the expanded edition of Broken Barricades.  It
includes some slightly interesting bonus tracks, an excellent concert
broadcast from WPLJ in April of 1971, and another concert from Swedish
radio in October of that year.  (Has it really been fifty years?  Yikes!)

While shopping with an Amazon gift certificate, I've noticed many releases
of multiple classic album packages that come from Great Britain.  The
Beach Boys' Sunflower with Surf's Up, Jefferson Airplane's
Volunteers, Bark, and Long John Silver, and Commander Cody's
Tales From the Ozone, We've Got a Live One Here!, and the
eponymous Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen.  The latter being
an excellent mix of Western swing, country, rockabilly, and boogie.

I'm also currently reading Star-Making Machinery:  The odyssey of an Album
by Geoffrey Stokes.  It chronicles in great detail the creation of Commander
Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen
, and along the way the inside workings
of the music business.  Published in 1976, it is of course dated, yet still
an very interesting read.

It took a couple of years, but I no longer have the feeling that I'm missing
something when 10am rolls around.  I continue to enjoy many of Captain Jack's
10@10 sets (thanks, Cap'n!), with the Beatles' covers sets being particular
stand-outs -- a testament to the song-writing of Lennon & McCartney.  I think
they were like two draft horses, each of which pulls in a different direction.
But when you yoke them together, they plow a straight furrow.  Lennon was serious,
McCartney more light-hearted, and the combination created great works.

Gary Brooker, lead singer of English band Procol Harum, dies, aged 76

Gary Brooker, the lead singer of the rock band Procol Harum, whose 1967 hit A Whiter Shade of Pale mesmerised baby boomer fans with its psychedelic melancholy, has died at the age of 76.

The pianist, composer and lyricist as well as frontman for the band had been treated for cancer. He died peacefully at home at the weekend.

elements of the rock counterculture with a love for roots music in the early 1970s, died Sunday at age 77.'

Huh - Greg decided to post this as "Dave Morey's 10@10 Valentine Day?" today:
There's more questions than answers when it comes to this truly bizarre 10@10, one that's ostensibly a Valentine's set. We've no idea when it first aired but we're guessing the mid 80's? With barely a recognizable tune in here and the fact that it includes the uncensored "Don't Fuck Around with Love" by the Blenders, one has to wonder who was in charge back then!? Anyway, we hope you enjoy and have a wonderful Valentine's weekend!

Should we tell him it's a "fan 10@10"? Maybe he knows?

Once again, Irish Greg has posted on FB about a 10@10 that he's not sure really aired on KFOG:

"It starts with the Ben Folds Five "Army" which drops a "fuck" in the opening line, followed by "Ugly Girl" by Fleming & John and later includes Britney Spears "...Baby One More Time” and a Willie Nelson song for good measure. The backsell at the end is garbled which makes us think that maybe this is a musical version of fan fiction, where somebody uses the 10@10 intro and outro and just inserts ten songs of their choosing. Maybe not though as there's a long news actuality in the middle about the Columbine High School Massacre..."

Sounds like another "fan-assembled" set. Does the above sound familiar to anyone?

Not even close.  My records span from late April 2002 through the end in 2016.  According to my files,
neither Ben Folds Five's Army nor Spears' ...Baby One More Time ever appeared on 10@10.  Ugly Girl
was only spun twice.  This was not a KFOG 10@10.

Keyboardist helped Miles Davis usher in the fusion revolution and founded his own game-changing groups,
including Return to Forever

"Chick Corea, the virtuosic keyboardist who broadened the scope of jazz during a career spanning more
than five decades, died on Tuesday from a rare form of cancer.  A post on his Facebook page confirmed
the news.  Corea was 79"

There's a Geico commercial where Build Me Up Buttercup (originally charted by The Foundations)
is sung by its characters as a kind of call-and-response.  I was a little puzzled that they would
use a song more than fifty years old for this, as I would suspect that few of their target demographic
had ever heard this song.  (I know that Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline is better known for the
call-and-response treatment, but it's been played at sporting events for over twenty years.)
[clickety-clickety]  I see that BMUB was on the soundtrack for Mallrats.  I don't know how it was
used in that film, but that might explain its expected familiarity with the intended audience.

In Memoriam, Happy Birthday / RIP Leslie West, 75
« on: December 24, 2020, 11:05:11 PM »

"Leslie West, the towering guitarist who created the hard-rock milestone "Mississippi Queen" with his band Mountain,
died Wednesday morning.  West’s brother, Larry West Weinstein, confirmed the musician’s death to Rolling Stone.
He was 75.  The cause of death was cardiac arrest.  On Monday, West was rushed to a hospital after suffering
cardiac arrest at his home near Daytona, Florida, where he never regained consciousness."

In their day, Mountain was a well-known rock band.  Now, fifty years on, they're just another obscure name (despite
Mississippi Queen being played on classic rock radio).  Nantucket Sleighride and Theme for an Imaginary Western
are among my all-time favorite rock songs, particularly for the sense of melancholy they evoke.

"Sean Connery, the irascible Scot from the slums of Edinburgh who found international fame
as Hollywood’s original James Bond, dismayed his fans by walking away from the Bond
franchise and went on to have a long and fruitful career as a respected actor and an always
bankable star, has died in Nassau, the Bahamas.  He was 90.

"His death, in his sleep either late Friday or early Saturday, was confirmed by his family."
